i think there was a topic on this, but i couldnt locate it:

Yes, Netflix is Coming to Wii Too

Just a few days ago, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings called chances for Nintendo support excellent. And by "excellent," we're sure he meant "inevitable" or "impending," because now the announcement is official. The NY Times reports that the service will be coming to the Wii this spring. Like the recent PlayStation 3 version of the streaming, it will require an Instant Streaming disc provided from Netflix. Unlike the Xbox 360 and PS3 options, however, the Wii doesn't support hi-definition streaming, which puts the console at a disadvantage for those who want their movies in HD. The NYT article cites growing rumors of a Wii HD in the same breath, but of course those are all unconfirmed.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime called the deal "a continuation of an effort to bring more and more entertainment to consumers who interact with the Wii." Now, months after stating the goal, Netflix is finally supporting all three major console platforms. We'll have impressions of the streaming on Wii once the discs are released later this year.

How come they chose to not support DVD playback on the Wii? I know it's got a DVD drive because the game discs are DVDs, plus I've seen the Wii homebrew crowd hack the thing to support playback. What gives?

Nintendo Of America suck.

That's pretty much the only reason.

The Japanese Wiis have no problem playing DVD movies.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was because if they could play DVD movies, then they could also read DVD-Rs, which would make hacking them easier. Which if was the case, is stupid, because every system will be hacked. Not if...just when.

Yeah true. I'm not really in to system modding because I don't want to brick my expensive toys, but I find it fascinating what the hackers do.

This is great news. I used to watch on my 360. But now it is shot, so I bought my buddy's modded 360. It is banned, so I can't get on live, but I can play burned discs. Plus, I got 28 games with it, so I don't mind. But it did suck that I couldn't watch my Netflix on it anymore. So, I'm excited for this. Plus, I won't have to pay for a gold Live account to use it.

Also, at this point, I could give a fuck less about HD for Netflix. If I am buying a copy of Ice Age 2, I might want it to look good. But for a one time viewing of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, I could give less than a shit about HD.

most of my friends who have the wii don't even have it connected to the internet. i need it to get games. not movies. i can understand why ps3 is set up for netflix because it plays blurays and most of those players support that feature. but oh well different strokes.

Yeah, we've gone too long of a way from the days of old, when consoles used to only play video games, and to an extent, music.

Nowadays, we pretty much want them to do everything under the sun, from playing movies to browsing the internet. Don't we have computers to do that kind of stuff?

we do own comps, but some people are too lazy to switch from the couch/bed to the desk chair. and its another way for netflix to make money.

I just read that less than 20% of Wii systems are connected to the internet, which surprises me considering the thing has built in wifi and takes seconds to setup. That's going to impact the success of this more than the lack of HD.

I put in a request for the disc so I can stream Netflix on my other TV (already have a 360 to stream to my primary TV). My wii has been collecting dust for almost a year so at least now I'll be able to use it for something.

Then they should get a laptop. That way, they could have a computer almost anywhere they go.

I have a laptop. But I've never been a big fan of watching shows and movies on my computer. I would much rather watch them on my tv. I don't think it's because I'm lazy (I may be wrong). I think it's just preference. But at the same time, I have no desire to surf the web on my tv. I would much rather be sitting at my desk with my mouse and keyboard.
