I would never let a three year old touch a video game controller. They'd fucking drool on it or something. I especially wouldn't buy them a game that used a plushie. I've seen what kids do to plushies.

so what you're saying is that because YOU wouldn't do it, it's not a good idea?

Yeah.
I was introduced to electronic gaming somewhere in the 4.5 - 5 range. I think any earlier than that is completely unreasonable, unless we're talking about some point and click Ernie's Big Splash bullshit, and only if a parent is manning the controls.

meh, we have a two and a half year old here, and she'll take a 360 controller and climb into a chair and play games with me just fine. I suppose it's a matter of upbringing.

There's only one way to settle this: knife fight. If I win, I'm right.

I was hoping this would turn into a discussion about parenting, which would prompt soldierhawk to jump at the opportunity to merge this with the topic in general discussion, which would then cause that topic to go off topic, resulting in jeebus locking it, which would cause backlash within the community. while the mods were busy stifling the uprising, the NWO would use this opportunity to attack general discussion, allowing hacker the time he needs to hack into the mainframe and replace you as syd lexia. the commoners would be none the wiser to our evil plot!

I started playing video games at 2, mostly Super Mario Bros and Battle City, where I played coop with my father.
Though sometimes I got pissed and shot the US headquarters, leading to a game over.

Why is it unreasonable? 3 year olds don't drool, and my son handles a Wii remote pretty well for a little kid, as like I said before, he has completed all of the Lego games by himself. Him and I even had a bunch of great Boom Blox sessions together when I rented it.
Once they get the concept of the game and how to use the control, 3 year olds are just as savvy as 6 year olds (and I know, because I have a 6 year old stepson too). I guess it's one of those things you need to actually have a kid yourself to understand.

I will certainly concede that point. As an actual parent with actual children, you know better than I whether your children possess the cognitive skills and reflexes necessary to play video games.
But I personally wouldn't risk it. Continuation of my bloodline or not, there is no child I wouldn't throw down a flight of stairs if they in any way damaged my consoles, games, or game peripherals. So until I decided they were worthy of gaming, my children would known my Nintendo as Daddy's Super Awesome Fun Machine That Will Kill You If You Ever Touch It Or Look At It For More Than 5 Seconds.

Yeah, you're definitely right there in that kids can do some damage to your games/controllers, even if you teach them well. I've written off the Wii for myself, so I just let them go sick on it and a couple of nunchuks have paid the price (another complaint about the Wii: the connector between the wiimote and nunchuk fucking sucks) and needed to be replaced. Plus those Lego discs I mentioned that he plays are pretty scratched up by now from being handled by a 3 year old.
I definitely won't let him play my PS3 once I finally get it until he is much older and can be trusted to handle it more gingerly.

The one thing I worry about, and I have absolutely no scientific evidence to back this up, is that if kids start on video games too early, they'll become dissociative.

I hear that if a kid plays doom, they'll shoot up their school.

I don't think that. But I do think that it is probably not a good idea to introduce children to immersive fantasy worlds in their preschool years. It has the potential to severely disrupt their social development in a lot of nasty ways. But again, I have absolutely no proof that it does.

Let's say an adult would play this, would they kneel on the floor like in the video? It'd probably be more comfortable to sit down and hold the thing in your lap, but then you'd look like a whackjob bouncing a stuffed animal around on your crotch.

I agree with FNJ on this one; my two year old niece likes to hold the controller and pretend to play NES with me all the time, and she's just fine with it.

It depends on the controller. I let little kids play NES with me all the time, but most newer stuff I'd be too afraid of them fucking up. Like, I play Sonic and Mario and stuff with kids lots, but when they want to play something on my DS or PS2, they sit on my lap and I'm totally lame about it (DS games using the stylus are totally off limits for obvious reasons, though).
I don't know, I think most kids can handle most games by the time they're five, or so. Shucks, my nephew's damned good at Sonic.

Yea.....I think you'd need an extremely understanding wife/GF/neighbor to not think you were a total whackjob. I wonder if/how well it would work if you didn't use the stuffed animal.

I was actually thinking it's pretty damn ugly. Looks like the bastard offspring of Crash Bandicoot and Stimpy.
