Your title is a misnomer. Jean Luc Picard was French, and therefore The rank of Knight Bachelor could not be bestowed upon him, at least not offically, and he wouldn't be able to use the "Sir" title in his name. Unless, of course he received the Légion d'Honneur, the Ordre National du Mérite, the Ordre des Palmes académiques or the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Government.

GOOD FOR SIR PATRICK! (Well okay, Mr. Stewart, until it becomes official.) I can't think of a current British actor who deserves it more, now that Sir Ian and Sir Christopher (and the ex-Sir Anthony Hopkins) have been honored.
And despite the fact that this is a title of honor and not nobility, I vote that it be allowed to pass to (one of) his most famous "children," Captain Picard, in light of his truly exemplary and heroic service to the galaxy. Who's with me on this!!!

Yep. Which is why he will ALWAYS be a superior Captain to Kirk--he puts the needs of the ship and his people above personal things like honor and ego. Or the need to get laid, for that matter.

He became an American citizen. Americans are prohibited by law from holding titles of nobility, so he had to trade his real knighthood in for the honorary kind. May have also had something to do with the fact non-British subjects can't be given titles of nobility, either. (I'm sure the tax benefits were well worth it though; if I remember right that was one of his major reasons for becoming a citizen. That and ease of working in Hollywood without a green card, I'd think.)

Fun Fact: Givien religous titles are recognized in the US, so if you were Knighted by the church you could be "Sir" or "Dame", and the US Government has to acknowledge it.

Still, that IS religious and not noble, so I guess it makes sense. It just happens that the titles are the same?
