I didn't make the analogy to appeal to your sympathy, but to reflect that doing any skit making fun of someone after they've died is in poor taste.

You don't need to have sympathy for the person to realize that whatever joke they were going to make is no longer funny and that's what the decision was about.

I see your point. But I still find it to be an interesting sociological phenomenon that once a joke/reference is proven to be true, it's no longer funny or acceptable. Such as how it's no longer PC to make a movie that features terrorists with turbans and beards. Or if the Octo-mom were to suddenly die from a catastrophic vaginal cave-in.

Interesting point; I never thought of it that way before, but it IS true. I don't quite know why that is either, but I do kind of agree with it, hypocritical or not. I guess once it becomes real its no longer funny because it reminds the person (or people around them I suppose) of a specific problem they're dealing with and being affected by. Kind of like, dead baby jokes are okay (she said with a grimace), but I sure as fuck wouldn't want to hear one around a parent who HAS actually lost a child. (Or any parent of a new baby, really.)

*Shrug* it is kind of weird now that I think about it, but I'm also kind of glad we're wired that way.

I saw the skit, it was her on the Weekend Update. Basically she just talked as if she was on the set of clueless. It wasn't that funny anyways. Personally I think its our humanity kicking in when we realize that someone has died and people are making fun of them. Once a certain period of time has passed people can laugh at the person they were again. It's just how things go.

My Grandpa died and no one wanted to mention any funny stories or dumb things he did, but now its almost 15 years later, (2 days a.k.a. Christmas) and we can tell stories and laugh at who he was an what he did in a heartfelt way without a second thought. It's just how things work. We are all different.

On a related note, what was the last thing to go through Kurt Cobain's mind?

His teeth.

That will never not be funny.

Or what does Pink Floyd and Princess Di have in common?

For both of them, their last big hit was the wall.

Percy Sutton, attorney for Malcolm X dies at 89. I know that's not a big celebrity name or anything but the thing that caught my attention and made me post it was something the artical mentions. The artical mentions that his father was born as a slave right before the Civil War. I find it incredibly fascinating that someone who was alive yesterday has a father from a time period that seems so far off. You think of the Civil War as impossibly long ago for anyone to have that kind of connection to it. It's crazy to think you could know someone today whose father was born while Abraham Lincoln was president. I don't know about anyone else, but it fascinated me.

Professional wrestler "Dr. Death" Steve Williams, dead at age 49, after a long battle with throat cancer. Although he wrestled for ECW, NWA, WCW, and the WWF/WWE, Williams had his most success working for All Japan Pro Wrestling in 90s.

Ironically, one of the most famous wrestlers of the 90s owes his ring name to Dr. Death... sort of. Because there was already a well-known Steve Williams in the industry, another man named Steve Williams was forced to find himself a new name. That man is today known as Steve Austin.

What did Princess Di's carriage turn into at midnight?

A wall.

Did you hear that Christa McAuliffe had dandruff?

Her head and shoulders washed up on a beach.

Those one liners are much more effective when they don't all have the same punch line or when I have a clue who the person is.

Christa McAuliffe (sp?) is one of the Challenger explosion victims.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

I'm amazed I missed the news about Dr. Death...I'm sure JR is pretty sad right now. I still think the German Suplex he hit on Ed Ferrera was one of the sickest suplexes I have ever seen. Another one gone far too soon.
