I noticed that most NES emulators have options for a soft reset and a hard reset. What is the difference? Is a soft reset when you hit the Reset button, and a hard reset when you turn the Power off than back on?

Yes.

I can't think of any NES games it makes a difference for, but it can for some games on later systems (X-Men leaps screaming to mind).

Yeah that's what i thought it was:

Soft: rest button

Hard: on/off switch.

I can't see the point of having them both, probably just for authenticity.

Battery-save games generally required a soft reset, lest you corrupt the data.

Did that ever actually happen? I never held the reset button when turning off Zelda or Zelda II, and nothing ever happened to my saved games.

it happened while playing Dragon Warrior. a lot.

but then again, anything would mess up my save file on that game. if i dropped the cartridge, if someone shook the cartridge, if someone made fun of its mom, etc etc

Never lost a DW save file, but I lost a DW3 save file.

As an example, a soft reset will remember a Contra high score, a hard reset will set it back to the default.

Well, there's why my Tetris scores keep getting erased.

The ladies prefer hard resets to soft resets, or so I have heard.

Well on older systems, it's always going to be erased, unless the game has a battery save, once you turn it off.

Aha ha ha ha. So many wasted hours getting my Tetris score up, and THIS was the reason why they all mysteriously disappeared the next morning. Looks like I owe my brother an apology. -cough-

Never lost a DW save file, but I lost a DW3 save file.

that wouldve driven me nuts, since DW3 is such a huge game

I suppose since emu games aren't battery saved, the way you reset and/or turn off your emulator has no bearing whatsoever on your save game?

Hmm.... that's an interesting question. I suppose it depends on how accurate the emulation is. If the emulation is 100% accurate, then theoretically you could corrupt your savefile with an abrupt hard reset. Of course, if you're on an emulator, you can just use insta-saves.

Hard resets clear ALL of the RAM, hence the deletion of high scores, etc, while a soft reset on clears certain registers of RAM, but I know not those addresses at this time. It's usually not a big difference, but it helps to know sometimes. The other day I was playing Mega Man X and noticed that if you use a soft reset while in game, you can go to the password screen from the main menu and your last password will be in there, whereas it would be all 1's (default) if it were a hard reset.

Some games had cheats that required a soft reset, such as Knight Rider for the NES. That's the only one I know of.

Secret of Mana had a Soft Reset glitch that gave you the Mana Sword, which was otherwise unobtainable with out Dryad and being at the end boss. It also glitched the fuck out of your game, and how someone stumbled upon it is still an unanswerable question.

I may have added this after some of you read it, but All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. has a soft reset glitch. If you perform a soft reset after reaching the radio personality in Worlds 1-4, then load World A, the last radio personality you rescued will take the place of the guy you normally rescue in Worlds A-C. However, they will still use the other guy's color palette.

Why this happens and more specifically, why it only works with Worlds 1-4, is beyond me.
