I haven't really played any Mario games since the SNES (Super Mario World and Mario Kart). At least as late as those games, she was always "Princess." At what point did she become Peach?

She wasn't "Princess", she was Princess Toadstool, dammit!

She was always Princess Peach in Japan, but her name was changed in the localization process. I believe the first North American game to refer to her as Peach was Yoshi's Safari on the SNES in 1993. For most people though, her shift to Peach came in the opening cutscene of Mario 64.

Keep in mind too that while the SMB1 instruction booklet lists him as "Bowser, King of the Koopas", in the early years, he was mostly referred to as King Koopa in America.

Actually I did know it was Princess Toadstool.....always just called her "Princess" for short.

I also recall being confused about the Bowser/King Koopa thing. If I'm not mistake, I think the TV show Super Mario Brothers depicted him as King Koopa as well.

I remember the first time I played the N64 game... I was pissed at that.

"PEACH? WHO THE FUCK IS PEACH!? HER GODDAMN NAME IS PRINCESS TOADSTOOL!"

I was ready to loathe the game after that. Luckily, it was good enough to convince me otherwise. If the game had been anything less than an A+ though, I probably would have completely hated it solely over the Peach name change.

it confused me at first. then it ticked me off and i was thinking 'fuck the japanese' this is our princess toadstool.

then i played the game and completely forgot about the name change. and by the time i was done, i just didnt care.

in hindsight, peach does sound better than toadstool. toadstool sounds like VD

Peach sounds weird. Especially the way she says it. The way she says "Peach" in the N64 opening makes me want to punch her. In fact, it makes me want to punch all women ever.

I remember when Bowser started being called Bowser in the games instead of King Koopa, my neighbor insisted that Bowser was King Koopa's son. My neighbor was like five years older than me so of course I believed him. What a fucking liar.

Didn't SM64 refer to her in the start as "Princess Toadstool (Peach)"?

I thought it was pretty clever, myself, far more than the way they introduced "Eggman".

That is correct. The way it's written, it sounds like Peach is her first name, Toadstool is her last name, and Princess Toadstool is her first name. This makes sense to me, and "Peach Toadstool" is how I rationalize the name change.

On a related note, fuck Eggman. That motherfucker's name is Doctor Robotnik.

Me and my brother had a fight about this when we got Yoshi's Safari. I kept saying it was toadstool, but he pointed the Peach thing...

Bowser's referred to as Koopa in Japan.

I'm okay with "Eggman"; his torso IS egg-shaped anyway.

I don't mind when Sonic calls him Eggman. I mean, Sonic obviously doesn't like him, and so it's a clever insult based on his physical appearance. The fact that he calls himself Eggman is kind of lame though. Robotnik is a much more imposing name. I do like that his name was never retconned away, and his proper name is still Dr. Ivo Robotnik and Dr. Eggman is his preferred pseudonym. Sonic Adventure 2 makes reference to this and delves into the past of both his cousin Maria Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald Robotnik.

But overall Eggman isn't terrible a name. And his E.G.G.M.A.N. theme song is fucking awesome.

You'd think Sonic would try to find another nickname that Dr. Robotnik doesn't like, like fat ass or fat fuck. I would love to hear Sonic call him one of those.

You never played Mario 8? It was okay, but the series kinda lost the magic after Super Mario Bros. 6...

Ok that's either a hack or a pirate right? Music physics power ups and enemies seem way too off.

It's a (Korean?) bootleg. There was a whole series of them. I believe they started at SMB4 and went up through at least 10.

Part of me wants to try it, the other part remembers the horror of Somario and Super Mario Bros for the Sega, and pointedly reminds me I have much better, legitimate games to try and beat.

It's just a hack of some of other game where they replaced the main character with Mario. Some of them are super sloppy. There's one that's Tiny Toon Adventures where Buster has been replaced with Mario, but if you change into the other guys, then suddenly you're just Plucky or Dizzy or whoever the third one was.
