I agree with that analysis 100%. He's just boring as balls.

Matthew Broderick should stick to fruity singing on stage parts and not try to be an actual movie actor. His "southern" accent in "Glory" was awful |
Erm...Broderick as Col. Robert Shaw wasn't a Southerner, his character was from Massachusetts, as was the real Colonel Shaw. So that would explain his bad "Southern" accent as you perceived it. It was an absolute effete, aristocratic, Northerner accent.

The only reason I honestly think he still gets work is because he was Ferris Bueller. And you something? While a lot of people LOVE that movie, I feel they could've made a better casting than him. I never saw how it was so acclaimed, but that's just me. Going to a Cubs game, fancy restaurant and seeing a very outdated song in a parade don't really constitute as an amazing day to me. Broderick has the personality of a wet washcloth, which is why you'll never get depth or emotion out of him. Sure he might raise his voice, but you won't get anger. He might smile, but you won't get satisfaction. But he was Ferris Bueller so he'll keep getting work. |
Ferris Bueller was played out years ago. Broderick is still living large on War Games and Project X money. Anything with Dabney Coleman is an instant blockbuster.

It's amazing to me that Broderick got out acted by a bunch of chimpanzees.

Forrest Gump, and if you're not gonna let it count then Full Metal Jacket. |
Forrest Gump is a great movie. Have you read the book? |
No but I've been wanting too ever since I heard of it. Is it worth tracking down?

Yes, it's one of my favorites. The book has plenty more events that the movie left out plus it's really funny.

So he is the definition of cool.
Listen, I'm not a huge fan of most of his other work, but I don't think he is as bad as you think he is. Other people might have been ok in the role of Ferris Bueller, but they weren't cast for it and he did a damn good job.
Looking back I really doubt that anyone who was involved with the making of that movie says, "Oh maybe we shouldn't have hired Broderick."

Excellent point.
For the record, I thought he did a good job in that movie.
Doddsino, as for that not making for an amazing day, I would disagree. I always have fun when I go to a ballgame. Even if my team loses, it is almost always a good time. Singing in a parade like that would be memorable. Plus, they were driving around in a classic restored Ferrari! You also have to remember he is playing hooky and is being pursued by Rooney. Add in all of the other crazy shit that happened and what he had to go through to pull it off. Are you trying to tell me that you wouldn't look back on that and say, "That was one helluva day"? Hell, I fondly remember skipping school with some of my friends and all we did was drive to Kansas City and fucked off all day. Nothing we did was even remotely that memorable.
