I've always wanted a Hedgehog, and these pictures make me want one even more. The problem is no pet stores around here sell them because they are illegal in Maine.

Are you sure they're illegal to own or illegal to sell?
Here in Iowa, it's illegal to own or sell a snapping turtle, but that didn't stop my friend.

From what I've heard they are illegal to own and sell, along with piranhas, tarantulas and a couple other animals along those lines. You literally don't see those in any pet store around here, and if you ask for one they tell you they are illegal. But if I were to go to New Hampshire and buy one it's not like I would be caught. It's still a pain in the ass though. I did a very brief search into it once on why hedgehogs were illegal and it had something to do with worrying about what they would do to the ecosystem up here if they escaped.

I think a thorough background search should be enough to handle it. Like a gun, they should lisense the animal to the owner, and if anything does happen, they can track it through a serial number or some shit and hold that person responsible. Plus it's a fucking hedgehog, they don't exactly have the same resistances as some animals like rabbits. Plus, they're pretty clumsy animals and would most likely get run over or eaten by something else.

What? What kind of a state makes Tarantuals illegal??? Is there fear about them getting loose and destroying the ecosystem or something?
I know you can own one in California, and there are few states more anal about you owning something "dangerous" than Cali.

I'm more afraid of the tarantula crawling into radioactive waste and growing 1000x it's size.

Hedgehogs are going extinct in England, so if we can find an ecosystem where they thrive enough to destroy the native population than I say go for it.
