I was looking to picking one of these up from ebay soon. I found a top rated seller who has refurbished snes minis with super mario bros for $70. Is that overpriced or fair?

With emulators these days, $1 is too much.

Haha definitely dude. I get tired of playing the games with the keyboard. The controller is way better.

I use a PS2 controller and USB adapter to play any games on an emulator. I do agree though that games on an emulator just don't feel the same than on the original console though. But then again, I wouldn't spend a load of money for a vintage console either just to play the games.

Anyways, that's way overpriced, even for a SNES2 (and unlike the NES2, there's no reason at all to get one over the SNES, except maybe for the space if you're really pressed for space). Probably taking at least a 100% markup on that shit, you can find a used SNES for about 40 bucks if you get it from someone who knows what they have...hunt around, you can find them a lot cheaper from people looking to dump their kid's old game system from 10 years ago.

I'd try and talk him down to $50.

I don't have any roms that I don't already own. All that shit's at my parents house and I don't plan on hauling it back with me. Come to think of it, when I have Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES, SNES, and the Wii, I don't feel too bad about downloading it onto my computer.

I'd have a hard time believing that playing on an emulator of a console that was discontinued 10 years ago should be considered "Stealing". Who exactly is it stealing from Usa? The dude selling refurbished SNES that he gets from Ebay? Or private citizens selling off their collections? It's not stealing any profits from Nintendo itself since it's impossible to buy a SNES and carts from them (games on the VC are excluded from this arguement since they are commercially available and shouldn't be downloaded), so who cares?

Downloading a PS2 emulator, fine seeing as how Sony still sells PS2 games, but a SNES one? Come on.

Yeah, I have no problem with downloading old school emulators. Try Craigslist, I saw a few deals in Hawaii depending on which part you are from...one was $60 with several games including Mario World...you won't find anything on ebay for much less from a reputable dealer.

It's not about the stealing to me. I don't care much about emulators anymore because they aren't authentic.

They really aren't. I actually prefer playing them on an actual console because there's a unexplainable charm about grabbing a cartridge, plugging it into a game console, booting the console up and using the original controller, something that no emulator can completely imitate.

Also, part of the fun in retro gaming to me is in the hunt for cartridges. I like looking for games that I don't already have in physical form for either the SNES or Sega Genesis. Then again, there is always the Virtual Console.

It's also way too easy to fall into temptation to cheat when it comes to emulators. I should know, because I used to download them all the time. Most known emulators have save states, so you can revisit a particular moment you save at. A handful of emulators, especially ZSNES, have a rewind feature, which allows you to go back in time whenever you lose a life. Just try not using those tools when you play games on them. I dare you.

Lastly, there are way too many video game videos on YouTube that use emulators, ranging from angry reviews to speed runs. (And plenty of the latter have tools used in them, which I find unimpressive.) I'd almost pay someone money to actually plug a console into a PC video card or PC TV tuner and play a game on that. That way, it'd be far more impressive.

You can disagree with me all you want. I don't care, because this is just my personal opinion.

I agree with everything you just said. A few months ago I went on a emulation kick revisiting a few old games I remember and found myself cheating my way through every game, so I stopped. I know some people play them straight on a emulator but it is so easy to get frustrated while playing some old 8-bit or 16-bit game, and I fell for the temptation every time. That is why I am not going to play these games till I get them on the Wii/Virtual Console.

Check your local thrift/resale shops if you're looking for an SNES. Luckily, my wife still had her old one and mine's in storage somewhere, but I had to track down an extra NES because the dog pissed on it and the piss went down in the little slats. I love that chihuahua but she's sadistic. Anyways, I see them regularly at Bookmans (our big book/electronics resale place) for around fifty or sixty bucks in good working order. ANd 30$ dreamcasts! I bought a RE: Code Veronica special version and two VMUs for like 40 and some change.

Thanks for the help guys. I found a super clean one in the original box for a decent price. Don't know if I'm going to pull the trigger though.

Everything looks to be in great condition and they're asking for $75. I really like the minis looks better so that's what I'm pulling for but I found a local original one in the same town I live in. Here's the link.

That just seems like such a great deal but I still don't know.

that's where I got my brother his SNES for fathers day. Only paid fifty bucks for it and most games are either 5 or 6 bucks

I actually like emulators more than the original consoles, because they're more reliable, convenient, and are useable on consoles such as Dreamcast, XBox, and PSP. Obviously, I do not condone stealing every SNES rom out there, but I find it easier to just run Sonic 3 on my PSP, than have to go through the trouble of getting my Genesis out of my attic and hooking it up to my TV for only a few days and take up space.

You're stealing from Nintendo, and apparently they care. You're using their intellectual property in a fashion they don't wish it to be used it, and they have a right to protect their property. It doesn't matter one whit that SNES carts are no longer being sold commercially anymore. We're talking about the programs, not the cartridges (and for the record, you never bought games and such from Nintendo directly anyways. Once they were in the retailer's hands, Nintendo was out of the picture. They had their profit in hand already).

You also sort of torpedo your own argument there too. When people say, "Oh, why pay for this on the VC, I'll just download it for free", it does cost them money. Or when they say "Oh, I won't buy the remake" or "Oh, I won't grab the old game collection". When people take it for free, it hurts their ability to sell it.

That said...I don't really -care- about it. I have roms. But you absolutely should not be arguing against buying a classic system and games because you can get them for free.
