So, my computer mouse just died. I've had it for nearly two years now, which is a pretty good lifespan for a $5 USB mouse from Tesco. I think it's the USB plug that's dead - I tested it on my laptop, sometimes it gets detected and sometimes it doesn't. When it does, it sometimes goes dead and you have to wave the cable a little bit, but when the mouse goes dead, the light indicating an USB connection doesn't go off.
So - any clues on what might have fucked up? It's not a major crisis for me, since I use a laptop and I was planning on getting a Razer DeathAdder soon, but in the meantime, does anyone know any necromancy I could use on that mouse to bring it back to life?

If you have multiple USB ports you can always try the other one. Alternatively try the mouse on another computer for a bit. Lend it to a friend for a day or two and just ask them to see if it fails midway through usage.
If you find out it is your computer, it could be some form of glitch with the OS, but more likely a capacitor is starting to slowly deteriorate and you have a hardware replacement issue on your hands.
What model laptop are we dealing with here?
Also what kind of mouse?

Agreed. Try another USB device in the same port. If it doesn't have any issues, it's your mouse. If it does, it's your USB port.

The situation got worse. Other port, other computer, nothing works. The mouse just totally died. All four computers I own, it simply doesn't work. Macbook, nope. Acer laptop with Ubuntu, nope. Two HP laptops with XP and Vista, nuh-uh. The mouse doesn't work at all. It receives power and the laser keeps flashing on and off.
I've given up on it, tho. I'm ordering a new mouse.
Can a mod please lock this?
