Final Fantasy V was almost released TWICE on the SNES in North America, cancelled both times. First, it was going to be localized as Final Fantasy III, but that fell through. Then after FF6 became FF3, FF5 was going to be Final Fantasy Extreme.

Was it going to have an over the top metal soundtrack and a sponsership with Mountain Dew?

And the tag line:

"We're taking Role Playing Games to the XXXTREME!!!!!!!"

Haha, that would have been awesome. But I don't think so . I believe the feeling was that the game was too hard/Japanese for the average American, and the Extreme was supposed to help get across the point that this game would not be Mystic Quest 2.

Yeah I know, I was one of those people pissed off back in '92 when FFV wasn't released. I know they were going to call it III back then but I didn't care, I just wanted to play the game.
