Bubastis is also fairly important plot wise, or at least it would be even they had a giant squid (or other creature) in the movie. I didn't think they explained the mask in the book though? I know Rorschach tells the entire story of how he made the mask and everything, but I can't imagine they mention anything about it changing because the first time I read it I hadn't even realize that it was changing to kinda show his expression.

I've read the book, and I recently saw the film (directors cut, on my friend's huge-ass HDTV). I must say that I'd recommend the book first, but the movie was still really, really good. I'm not sure of the differences between the cut I saw and the theatrical one, however.

Yeah, I was just thinking about how they didn't mention Bubastis' origin because it's linked to the ending they changed. Rorschach mentions during his origin story to the shrink where he got his mask; he worked part time cleaning up a dress maker's shop and some woman ordered a dress made from a special multi-layed fabric with liquid between the layers so the pattern changed constantly then canceled her order when she saw it. He stole it and used heated scissors to cut his mask from it, sealing the layers as he did so it wouldn't leak.

Ah, I knew all of that except the whole liquid layer part, for some reason I just remembered it as being an ugly design, lol.

Here are the differences between the unrated and theatrical versions.
http://film-book.com/watchmen-directors-cut-differences-from-theatrical-version/
There are a lot of things they put in the movie that were not in the book, the opening sequence with a lesbianized version of the famous navy guy kissing a nurse after Japan surrendered, the nice little reenactment of the Kent state shootings with a flower child girl putting a flower in one of the rifles right before being blown away, several scenes with a grotesque looking Richard Nixon. At one point he upon hearing that the country is going to lose the entire east coast to nuclear annihilation, he laughs and says something to the effect of "Let's see those Harvard people think their way out of fission". None of that was in the book.

Bought it for $5 at my local video store that was closing. I could only get about an hour through it before giving it a rest. It's way too wordy. Part of the advantage of film over paper is that you can speak more without speaking (if that makes sense). It may have just been a bad night for me, I'm going to give it another go.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

I read the book before I saw the movie, I'm just not sure what the differences between the two cuts of the movie were.

That was what the link was for, the differences between the two versions of the film.

the hollis mason scene and the following nite owl scenes were really gripping. I don't know why they were cut from the theatrical cut.

I saw it when it came out and...eh
I mean it wasn't terrible or anything...I just didn't think it was as good as some people were saying it was.
I could elaborate more, but it's been a long time since I've seen it and I'd probably fuck things up.
Also, I never read the graphic novel, so hold that against me if you want.

I hope the real ending ended with them crucifying Manhatten for being an annoying douchebag

I really like Manhattan, and besides what good would that do? I guess on a symbolic level crucifying a defacto god might make him a christ figure too, on the other it really wouldn't do much to kill the guy seeing as he's immortal and all.
In any case, justifications, with you first.

Nah...I just hated everything about him, he reminded me too much of Spock. He was basically the emo douche of the movie. The only 2 enjoyable Watchmen in my eyes got killed. Night Owl was pretty boring, as was the woman. The fight scenes seemed to just be thrown in there, just for the hell of it. And the whole basis of the movie seemed to be based around the idea that it's ok to play God as long as it straddles the basis for less violence. So if this IS based exactly on the graphic novel, then it's making the argument that it's ok to drop the bomb on Hiroshima because it ends the war. Also the fact they put "99 Luft Balloons" to remind you that it was the '80's was an insult to anyone with a brain.
