It is still a work in progress right now. It will cover everything I fondly remember from 1998. Video games, movies, music and so on. I've only done a few quick reviews on some of the video games so far but I'll be adding a lot more soon.

I started dating my wife in 1998.
I turned 18 in 1998.
Music kinda sucked in 1998, but movies were good and video games were quite good too.
Best part about 1998 though was the stock market. There was a little dip in there, but holy shit, that thing was kicking ass for those who waded through the 3rd quarter blues.

I turned 18 in 1998 also. Video games were amazing in 1998 and music wasn't great but one of my favorite albums was released that year, Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty.

I know this will keep me from sitting with the cool kids at lunch, but in addition to my loves of the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, etc., I do have a soft spot for late 90s music. 1997-1999 were so full of poppy crap that I actually found some of it endearing and good. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of shit that I'd like removed from my memory... but some of those corny, radio-friendly songs made me tap my foot.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

I know exactly what you mean, I've been addicted to the Third Eye Blind song "Semi-Charmed Life" lately.

That's a prime example right there. You can add Vertical Horizon, Semisonic, the Verve Pipe, Seven Mary Three, and so on to my list. When I dig those songs up now, and I get reminded of my last two years in high school (97-99), I have to admit I get pretty nostalgic for it. The quintessential late 90s pop song for me is below... Athaneaum's What I Didn't Know. They've faded into obscurity nicely.

You know what, I'm unapologetic for my love of late 90s pop. It's a million times better than late 00s pop.

I also turned 18 in 1998.
I graduated high school in 1998.
I took my Senior Trip in 1998.

You don't have to tell me 1998 rocked. I was there.

I was eight years old in '98, and I remember that was the year that Pokemon came to America. It was a good year. Maybe not in music, though. Sure, "The color and the Shape", "Americana", 'Garage Inc.", and SOAD's debut kicked ass, but other than that...eh. I might be missing some albums, but a quick scan of Wiki shows that those were the only albums from that year I happen to own.

good lord fnj, good lord.

I'm not big on the j-pop scene, but I always thought the j-pop performances in Animes were exaggerated like everything else. I apparently stand corrected.

Here's a prime example of that late 90s music, hearing it now it kind of sounds like a u2 rip off.

Yes! Late 90s pop-rock!! The end of 1998 was when I got my first clock radio. I've never lived without 24 hour music in my room since. Other than that, I was 9 years old, so things weren't too exciting.

Metal Gear Solid came out in 1998...
Along with Parasite Eve, Resident Evil 2, Rainbow Six, Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time, Star Craft Broodwar and Starseige: Tribes, just to name a few. The Gameboy Color was released, as well as Sega's NAOMI Arcade board and the Dreamcast.

In Literature: Harry Potter 2 came out, Rainbow Six also and Frank Muir Died.

I'll leave the movies to other people...

This belongs in the OPP.

I was 14 in 1998, super happy with a free roof over my head, free food, no bills and no worries except grades. God I miss that.

I know, however the song was used way too much in 1998. I remember hearing it in commercials and it was featured in the trailer for the US version of Mr. Nice Guy with Jackie Chan.

Maybe, but I wanted to get other people's thoughts on the year and though it was more of a general topic since it covers many areas of 1998, or it at least will. I'm still working on the video game section.

I'm still working on the video game section but many of those games will be in the article at some point.

Lots and lots of pepsi, not having to go to daycare anymore, Game Boy Color, and beating Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on Nintendo.

That song and Eve 6's "Inside Out" are the songs that immediately transport me back to 1998.

Holy fucking shit, it's been almost TWELVE years since LoZ:OoT and Pokemon? Dear God...I think I can say that in between OoT, MGS, Pokemon, the memorable music, and Sifl and Olly, 1998 was probably the best year of my life.

Oh, to be twelve again...

ChiSoxFan, your signature makes me laugh out loud every time I see it. Kudos. And Eve 6 is another one of those bands that was pretty representative of the late 90s. There was a rash of bands that put numbers in their names back then:

Eve 6
Blink 182
Seven Mary Three
Stroke 9

I wonder why that was.

1998 was the perfect time to invest in Google Stock
1998 is when the masses got their PS1 or N64
1998 is when computers started to become affortable.
1998 is when Half Life came out

1998 was a good year from a guy born in 1983

The best years of the 1990's were as follows
1991-great NES games released, SNES soon launched
1994-living in 1994 was fun because of the excitment of all the new video game
consoles coming into play (Virtual Boy,3D0,Jaguar,32X) even though looking back it was disapointing
1995-Ton of great movies out, Summer Blockbusters
1997- Just a good year in general because I started to lose a ton of baby fat
1998- really good for the reasons stated above
1999-borderline good,Dreamcast and PS2 talk,Napster, Eminem-Britney Spears pop culture era.

The bad
1990- still getting rid of the bad 80's stigmas
1993- sucked more for me personally
1996-everyone i knew was fat during this year or gained alot of weight and it sucked because of this

Thank you, sir. Smile

I think 1998 was also the year the Beastie Boys released "Intergalactic". (After a quick spot of research, my suspicion was indeed correct), another song that couldn't help but make that summer a memorable one. "Closing Time" by Semisonic was another song that found its way into my heart that year.

You know what other song that I couldn't help but enjoy that year? "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy and Monica. Embarrassed

I think once I get my own time machine, the first year I'm going back to is 1998.
