Well, I need help finding a game, I have some minor details that could probably help, and here they are.
All I can remember of the game is you start out as a kid and the world's entirely black and white, and you walk around a town, go to a cave with a friend I think and you both get killed and it ends up being a dream. I know it's on the SNES or NES, so if that narrows it down at all. Thanks in advance.

The entire game is in black and white? Are sure it's not a Gameboy game?
No, the game starts out Black and White, and then after you enter a cave you and your friend, possibly excluding the friend, because I can't remember well enough, you get killed by this weird monster, and I believe you wake up outside of the cave.

Breath of Fire 1 or 2 starts out black and white, I can't remember which one, but that doesn't sound like the game you are describing.

FNJ you really need to change that avatar. How bout a Ghostbusters sign or something pop-culturish, maybe not Japanese weirdness.
