According to this article...
Quote: |
Planning sessions for Final Fantasy VII began in 1994 after the release of Final Fantasy VI. At the time, the game was planned to be another 2D project for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi intended the story to take place in modern New York City in the year 1999. Several of the staff members were working in parallel on Chrono Trigger, and development for Final Fantasy VII was interrupted when the other project became important enough to require the help of Yoshinori Kitase and other designers.
A rumor taken from Gamefan vol. 3 March 1995 says that the Super Famicom version of Final Fantasy VII was going to use a Donkey Kong Country-style SGI graphics and the game was suppose to be on a 64 Megabits cartridge ( 8 MB ).
Some of the ideas originally considered for Final Fantasy VII ended up in Chrono Trigger instead. Other ideas, such as the New York setting and the sorceress character Edea, were kept unused until the later projects Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy VIII respectively. The original script of Final Fantasy VII, which was written by Sakaguchi, was completely different from the finished product. Tetsuya Nomura recalled how Sakaguchi “wanted to do something like a detective story”. The first part of the story involved a character named “Hot Blooded Detective Joe” who was in pursuit of the main characters. The main characters managed to blow up the city of Midgar, which had already been developed for the story. |
The article goes on to show some development screenshots.
Just thought it might interest ya. Also, imagine a Final Fantasy on the SNES with Donkey Kong Country style graphics. Wouldn't it be awesome?

Honestly? No. "Donkey King Country style graphics" are one of the worst things that happened in the 16 bit era.
It's not much of a secret that FF VII was being worked on for a Nintendo system up until the falling out over the CD issue. I don't think the game would have been nearly as interesting or successful on the N64 either.

I wouldn't enjoy it as much if it was blocky and hazy like DKL... Actually I'm more curious about the pyramid fight between Sephiroth and Aeris and the Pyramid which sends you to the top left corner of the game...

But a 2D adventure would have had a harder time of selling Cloud's emo personality.

Sorry in advance, but I call bullshit. I don't think graphics necessarily would've ruined Cloud's story. There's plenty of 2D games with well developed characters and personalities.
That being said, I think 3Dish really did help FFVII's presentation. I think the reason so many people glommed onto it was that it was the first Final Fantasy to step beyond the sprites and fully embrace an immersible world. Character-wise, the graphical overhaul would've had a negligible effect, but setting wise, it was an immense aid.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

Not really. They'd just have him lower his head very often.
Oh, and use more ellipses.

Probably better that it didn't turn out that way, because then FF VIII would have been the first 3D FF game, and people would have been convinced that FF can't exist in 3D without sucking.

Truth be told, I didn't find it that terrible. It had a few strong points, but overall the suckage outweighed those good points.
A few of my reasons:
-None of the characters evolved besides Squall. I actually found him to be kind of interesting, but his development came at the expense of all the others
-I hate RPG's where the enemies level up with you. It defeats the whole purpose of having levels
-The process of acquiring new weapons was stupid. I don't see how you get a new sword by finding a screw and a turtle shell
-You find out waaaaay too late that Sorcoress Ultimecia is the real bad guy.
-The whole "time compression" thing is somewhat of an interesting idea, but you never get the point of why she wanted to achieve it
-Selphie and Irvine were annoying. So were Zell, Rinoa and those orange monkey things.
-Drawing magic for the first several hours of the game is annoying. I'd rather just grind the old-fashioned way, by killing shit.

I'd fuck Selphie and Rinoa, just to shut them up. Why didn't Squall just fuck Rinoa in the first scene? Maybe she wouldn't talk so much.

That Pyramid fight you can actually access in the game in the debug room from what I understand. The Pyramids were basically a test enemy I believe and can't be defeated. If you read the Debug Room FAQ on GameFaqs is has a lot of interesting stuff in there including the Pyramid thing.

That is really weird, I haven't read the Debug FAQ in forever, should have watched the video before I said they were unbeatable.

IMO Selphie > Rinoa > Quistis. I'm not really into "older women" the glasses do it for me, but the whip and mentor status really put me off of her.

Older women! WTF!?!! Isn't she supposed to be like 19! You call that an older woman?! How old are you kid? Besides, Quistis is a total sex symbol, subliminal as it may be. Just look at the whip, the glasses, and she's the hottest character in the game. Of course the implication is 'dominatrix' all the way.

I'm gonna have to go with Selphie on this one too. I'd guess she's probably the tightest of the three.

In Final Fantasy VII I renamed Yuffie 'Jailbait', which is what I would've renamed Selphie, but the game wouldn't let me.
