I buy games based on reviews on the box. If the back has a quote from IGN saying it's game of the year, I buy it instantly.

Shake it, Quake it, Space Kaboom.

That doesn't make a difference to a person like me, and not all gamers are sold on finding information on the Internet. If I'm spending money on advertising a product, I would do everything in my power to give you a reason to buy it. What does this tell me?

"Look, our game isn't really that different from other games, so here's a guy's O Face and a fucking bell tolling."

Yeah, I agree. I'm not arguing with you that the commercials are good, I'm just saying they are totally redundant and pointless. They most likely know that which is why they are trying to sell you some ideal or "edgyness" instead of actually showing you the game. I think a good majority of the people who see an advertisement for a game on TV and are interested by it, will immediately look it up online to see if it's worth getting. They know you're going to research it on the internet anyway, so they try to suck you in using other methods than just showing gameplay.

Do people really still buy games and movies based solely on TV advertisements? You don't research the game at all before spending $50 on it?

gamers are a different breed than normal people. we read about a game, and we do tons of research on it before we decide to buy it (unless you're a nintendo fanboy and buy most anything w/mario on it [im buying mario wii the day it comes out in about 2 weeks or less])

these commercials, from what i understand, are aimed towards grandmas or moms or cousins or uncles, who need to buy someone a birthday gift. or christmas gift. or yom kippur gift. or whatever. they might not be as well informed as us, so they might see the commercial, and just casually ask 'is that a cool game?' most kids would respond, 'yeah its alright.' and that would be good enough for anyone to buy the game.

I am talking about Final Fantasy II. I remember yelling outloud to that commercial. That made me yell out loud when I finally got the game for the SNES.

I do everything in my power to find another source other than IGN. Not only are they biased for a certain system, but they also rate a lot of games WAY too high. A lot of these games that they've given 10's to, are sometimes much lower and not to mention, they look for things in games differently than I certainly do.

Take for example GTAIV, gets a perfect review. Even though I don't have the cash to throw down for a PS3, I decide to play it on my friend's PS3. Way overrated. Now I'm not saying it's a terrible game or anything, but they took the absolute best elements of the GTA franchise and decided to make it more serious. Also, many of the missions feel the same, and there was hardly any challenge to this game compared to the PS2 games. Also the "select your destiny" is stupid, it basically panned out almost the same way and didn't branch off the way you would think a "choose your path" game would. Also bear in mind, they said this game was the BEST in franchise, which is a fucking joke! Just because something can be more elaborate, doesn't mean it's better.

IGN does this shit all the fucking time, they drool over some of the nonsense that I feel plagues most games today. I have no problem with having extra stuff to do in the game or anything of that sort, but when some of the achievements are playing 100 hours to unlock fucking pink armor, who the fuck cares? Why is this shit hyped? Going back to the "more elaborate is better" thing, I can't remember what game is was (I think it was either the original Super Mario Bros. or Legend of Zelda), that they said it doesn't really hold the test of time because of the graphics. Not only is that the biggest case of horseshit, but anyone who played the original Zelda back in the day, liked it, but now doesn't because of the inferior graphics, is a fucking idiot.

yeah, i dont care for IGN. they rate way too high on some 'high-profile' games or way too low on other 'low-profile' games (god hand for example)

I trust Gamespot's reviews for the most part as I agree with them more ofthen than not, but metacritic really is the best site to go to if you're looking to get a fair and balanced score for a game.

My major complaint with new game commercials is they all either only show the cut-scenes in the commercial instead of the actual game play or they barely show the game at all. Cut-scenes always look better than the actual game.

Then again, I remember this commercial for the Legend of Zelda which barely shows the game at all and has little to do with the game either.

Was it memorable, yes , but that definitely was not what sold me on the game.

I'm glad I never saw that commercial, otherwise I don't think I would have ever played a Zelda game.

From what I read the man in that commercial is the guy that did the Crypt Keeper's voice on Tales from the Crypt. That meant nothing to me at the time though.

I believe there was a thread that encouraged the posting of old video game commercials, whereas the premise of this thread is to bitch about the downfall of contemporary VG commercials.

However, as expected it has devolved into people posting vids of their favorite old VG commercials again (a la me).

Hahaha, they get so frustrated and angry. I wish I knew what Mario and Link were saying.

you see, it's not the commercial descussion that is eerie, it's the fast food fighters menu screen and someone questioning wendy's age that throws me.

Isn't Wendy suppose to be like, fucking 12?

Oh, and I really enjoyed to GTA Ballad of Gay Tony commercials for no particular reason.

I could have sworn this same disscussion popped up in a past thread and i think someone asked if they could play as the King and slap wendy around.

I want to see them advertise Bayonetta in a way that draws people in without making gamers look like a bunch of loner perverts.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
