I should clarify right away that I'm refering to those FPS style games that usually show nothing more than just some cinematic that tells me nothing about the game, usually accompanied by some female chanting in the background. It seems like every fucking games does this nowadays. And there's a commercial for a game that has nothing more than some guy with his O Face and a bell tolling in the background. How bout trying to sell me on the game people...not making me scratch my head at what the fuck I'm looking at.

I prefer the old commercials with people running through the streets, and some guy screaming "Mortal Kombat!"

Or the commercial where they show you someone playing the game and exclaming how awesome it is, and if you're lucky, you might see the actual game for a second or two.

I like the new PS3 ad's, especially the one where the guy is playing Uncharted 2 and his girlfriend thinks it's a movie.

Except for the very unfunny joke about "that's how World War 1 got started".
Also, I think the name of the game for those commericals is Assassin's Creed 2, you'd never fucking know because they don't say or show you anything other than the fucking O Face and then some symbol for a split second. I couldn't find the said commercial on Youtube though.
All these FPSers play so alike that their commercials are starting to look alike.
Also, what the fuck is with all these exclusives nowadays? All this bullshit about preordering certain games at Gamestop and getting some fucking "badass" thing you wouldn't normally get if you bought it anywhere else. Sorry, but Gamestop fucking sucks, and if game companies are going to pull that shit, then I just won't but their games.

It's because it keeps the publishers and Gamestop peaceful. If they didn't, no publishing company would want anything to do with Gamestop. Gamestop is bad because it is reselling games, so the publishers never see any money from all the used sales. This causes lost sales and money for them.
So Gamestop makes a deal with the publishers. "We'll try to sell more new games then used ones, but you gotta give us something special, that will make our customers want to buy the games new from us!"

I fucking HATE the Assassin's Creed 2 commercials. They make me want to buy every single game that ISN'T Assassin's Creed.
If you're basing your game purchases on video game commercials, there's something wrong with you.
And wow, I hope that's a real game sideway. The picture is pretty awesome regardless.

I mostly agree with the general consensus here, but I will say that I actually quite liked the Halo: ODST commecials. I'm not a Halo fan so its not like it made me run out and buy them, but they certainly weren't annoying and I found myself genuinely wanting to watch when one came on. Especially the ODST funeral vid...gave me chills.
I liked the Gears of War 2 one with the drop ship and that really cool, beautiful music too.

I haven't really enjoyed the L4D2 commercials put out by gamestop. In fact most of the more recent commercials by GS have been below my standards of entertainment.

Lets be perfectly honest here. When i buy a FPS i don't buy it for the plot i buy it to run around shooting shit with cool weapons. That's the only reason i buy it.

Isn't that the commercial's POINT? To SELL you on the game? When these commercials do nothing but make me scratch my head, I don't even want to bother with them.

Yeah they were, 10 years ago. Now as ubiquitous as the internet is today, game commercials are superfluous because you can just go online and look at the reviews it's gotten, check message boards to see what your peers think, etc. The only purpose they serve now is to notify you that the game exists so you can do some research on it on the internet, and even then, it's not really necessary.

That doesn't make a difference to a person like me, and not all gamers are sold on finding information on the Internet. If I'm spending money on advertising a product, I would do everything in my power to give you a reason to buy it. What does this tell me?

But what about these Gamefly commercials, like this one?
Yeah, we all get pissed off at bad video games (and sometimes, at good ones, too) but I think this is exaggerating a bit.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not arguing with you that the commercials are good, I'm just saying they are totally redundant and pointless. They most likely know that which is why they are trying to sell you some ideal or "edgyness" instead of actually showing you the game. I think a good majority of the people who see an advertisement for a game on TV and are interested by it, will immediately look it up online to see if it's worth getting. They know you're going to research it on the internet anyway, so they try to suck you in using other methods than just showing gameplay.
Do people really still buy games and movies based solely on TV advertisements? You don't research the game at all before spending $50 on it?
