so, apparently San Francisco, USA has decided to man up, in the gayest way possible.

San Francisco votes to ban cat declawing
By a 9-2 vote, San Francisco's Board of Supervisors passed a measure Tuesday making it a crime for pet owners to declaw their cats. Violators face a potential jail sentence of six months and fine of up to $1,000.
The Los Angeles City Council plans to vote on a similar resolution Friday.
"Declawing cats is cruel and a form of torture," said the San Francisco measure's author, Ross Mirkarimi, who represents the city's 5th District. "It has not proven to be medically necessary."
In part, Mirkarimi and his counterparts brought the matter to a vote in order to beat a Jan. 1, 2010, deadline that prohibits further cat declawing bans.
Feline onychectomy, the medical term for declawing, is already illegal in Norfolk, Va.; West Hollywood, Calif.; and 25 countries around the world, including most of Europe. |

Cat Declawing is completely retarded. I think the only reason that a cat should have it's claws removed is if:
A: You plan on it staying inside the house indefinitely and don't want it to scratch your precious Batman poster.
B: You have a small child that could maybe be scratched by the animal.
I have seen literally hundreds of cases of cats being brought into the Vet's office I use to frequent that have gotten torn the fuck up because it's the only one in the neighborhood without claws so it has absolutely no way to defend itself other than it's little cat teeth. I'm not completely against it, but I think too many people do it for no reason at all.

Most people tend to only get rid of a cat's front claws, but in my opinion if your cat's nasty enough to frequently scratch others on purpose, then I think you need a new cat.

First of all, I would argue that Provincetown, MA had the largest number of homosexual residents percentage wise. Second I would argue that the residents sexual preferences have nothing to do with cats.
Thirdly, I agree that cats should not have their claws removed. If you can't handle a cat with claws, you shouldn't have a cat.

My girlfriend's cat attacks my feet while I'm asleep. So for that reason, I'm glad it doesn't have claws. Maybe it wouldn't use them if it did, but fuck it, I wouldn't want to find out.

What I found interesting about the story and it's potential link to sexuality is this quote, "Feline onychectomy, the medical term for declawing, is already illegal in Norfolk, Va.; West Hollywood, Calif."
West Hollywood is the predominantly homosexual borough of Los Angeles. Even the police cars there have an abstracted gay flag on the side of their patrol cars. Coincidence that cat declawing is illegal there as well?

I don't think cats are inherently feminine/gay. But it does seem that women tend to be the biggest cat lovers (you don't hear of many "crazy cat-men").
And since gay men often act like women, it's understandable that cats could be associated with gay men.

Another issue with declawing cats is that it leaves a cat defenseless and unable to hunt. And all cats get out sometimes.
Claws are part of the cost of owning a cat. Teach it to scratch a post or find a way to deal.
I don't see anything "gay" about this at all. It's so completely San Fran though.

Does a housecat really know how to hunt when it gets outside? I never had a cat growing up, so I don't know.
I remember hearing somewhere that cats are the only animals besides humans that are believed/known to kill for amusement.

That would be dolphins, who kill and then play with corpses of Porpoises.

This isn't manning up at all! A real man would defend our human right to declaw cats for our own amusement/convenience. This ban is just the sort of thing you'd expect from liberal khaki-short wearing San Franciscans.

Cats also kill for amusement/exercise. Domesticated cats never eat what they kill.

They bring back corpses to pay tribute to their caretaker too.

It would be cooler if they built pyramids out of their skulls.

Hunting is instinctual, so they will, or at least try. They just may not be any good at it. You try hunting in a strange area.

You're confusing "kill" with "have sex". Common mistake.

WRONG. My old cat when I was growing up would eat mice and such it caught all the time.
I remember at my graduation party, in front of a bunch of guests, all of a sudden the cat zips out of nowhere, pounces a mouse, and starts munching on it right in front of everyone. Swallowed it whole. With everyone watching.

Declawing is the relative equivalent to removing the part of your finger at the first joint from the tip, I've seen a few declawed cats that have had issues walking and keeping balance being that they've had part of the limbs they walk on removed. It's not super common but it does happen from time to time.

Animals don't have rights. I like my cats declawed, my dogs shock collared, and my bears driving around in small cars while wearing a fez hat.

Beat me to that, Thunder Thief. Thank you.
I don't own cats (deathly allergic), but I live with two of them since my sisters own 'em. As much as they drive me crazy and make me sneeze my brains out I would still never inflict a declawing on them.

The same people championing this new law are probably staunch advocates of the merciless removal of same animals testicles, making them the butt of jokes by all the feral cats. Where do we draw the line between convenience and animal rights.

Umm are you retarded? Do you really think people are neutering animals just because it's convenient for us?

That's a good point Burt. If declawing is bad, then shouldn't neutering be condemned as well? It doesn't benefit the pet at all (and in fact, as with any surgery, has a risk of fatality), and we only do it for our own convenience in keeping the cats and dog populations down.
My wife's cat is 100% indoor (we don't allow her to go outside except out in our small back garden that she can't escape from) and still has her claws, but damn, it'd be nice if she didn't. She's put holes in my jeans by doing that weird pawing thing that cats do when they're on your lap, scratches us up when she jumps into our laps, and scratched up some furniture to shed the claws.
If spaying and neutering are ok when necessity calls for it, shouldn't declawing be ok in certain situations too then?
