What are some older games that can be found and emulated that were favorites to you, but not nessicarily a mainstream success or hit?
For me a couple of great RPG/Strategy games to recommend would be:
SNES:
Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons
Tecmo Secret Of The Stars
Pacific Theater of Operations II (P.T.O. 2)
Also, for a fun RISK like game:
Lords Of Conquest - Commodore 64

OK. You did the thread that I always wanted to do.
From day one, I wanted to inform the people on these forums about these cool games that are underrated, un-noticed or Japan-only, to stir up more appreciation for said games. For that, I commend you. I was also doing it in so many other threads, but for single games.
Let me start with:
Shin Nekketsu Kouha-- Kunio-tachi no Banka
Lowdown on the series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nekketsu_Koha:_Kunio-Kun
Quote: |
Western gamers who grew up with the NES knew the game series through Renegade, River City Ransom, Super Dodge Ball, Crash 'n the Boys: Street Challenge and Nintendo World Cup, which were heavily localized versions of the Kunio-kun games. |
Anyway, this game is one of the greatest beat' em ups on the SFC.
(Don't worry, this game was translated by Aeon Genesis)
A lot of profanities are thrown around in this.

I found a translated Japanese Squaresoft game for SNES called Bahamut Lagoon. It basically merges the battling, equipment, and experience system of classic Final Fantasy with the strategy of Front Mission. It's freakin awesome!

Catalina was always my favorite. I used to be able to get her stats up, a fleet of Venetian Galeass ships, and the best gear in less than 4 hours.
For those who do not know much about it, New Horizons was made by Koei, who is famous for the Romance Of The Three Kingdom games, and the Dynasty Warrior series. This is a RPG/Stragegy game. The games takes place durring the age of discovery period of europe. And, you choose to play as one of the following characters.
(Thanks to Wiki)
In this game, there are six protagonists to choose from, each of them representing a different path or career featured in the game. They are listed as follows:
João Franco: Son of Leon from the first game, a Portuguese explorer sent by his father to follow the family's footsteps and discover the secrets of the lost Atlantis continent.
Catalina Erantzo: Former Spanish naval officer turned pirate, she avenges the loss of her brother and her fianceé and suspects that the Franco family is behind this scheme.
Otto Baynes: English naval officer, a privateer sent by Henry VIII in a secret mission to defeat the Spanish Armada and prevent Spanish hegemony in the European continent.
Ernst Von Bohr: Dutch teacher and cartographer, he is set to make a journey to far lands and with this experience create a map of the entire world.
Pietro Conti: Italian treasure hunter, he inherited a huge debt from his father and is set to travel for treasures and other secrets in order to cover the debt.
Ali Vezas: Turkish merchant, he grew as a orphan in extreme poverty. With the help of his friend, he decides to become a trade merchant and find his lost sister.
*********************************************************************
The RPG comes from your character building stats and abilities over time, and the strategy comes from ship battles and duels. The duels in basically a paper-rock-scissors affair, 3 attacks and 3 defenses, when if the right defense is picked then the attack is perfectly blocked. I plays out as a card game, very cool. And, you do not need to play the original Uncharted Waters to enjoy this game.

I used to rent Uncharted Waters II (New Horizons) all the time! I usually played as one of the explorers, though I've been hankering to play as one of the traders. That was an amazing game and I've always been shocked that it wasn't more popular.

The Legend of Silk Road is pretty badass. It's not that old (1999), but it is a damn fun 2D arcade beat 'em up.

No, no, no
Super Dodge Ball is part of the Kunio-kun series, which included a lot of beat-em-ups, RPGs and sports games.

I actually found the defualt characters to be the most useful.
except for african, because his spears can hit enemies over obstacles.

I'm not even kidding. the cahracter was named "african" and looked like a black guy with a spear in th jungle. I think on genesis tehy cahnged him to "tribesman" or something, which is worse.

Has anyone checked out ABA Games? They make these weird shoot 'em ups, but they're so cool, and all of them have this "Rez" feeling to them.
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/index_e.html
I'm playing creator Kenta Cho's most recent game, Titanion.
Picture Galaga mixed with Rez and remade for modern audiences, like this:
ABA Games was also seen on The Screen Savers.
