Northwest Computers And Accessories

They are a local wharehouse that sells everything PC. They don't carry much in the way of hardware like Mobo, CPU, RAM, or Videocards, but they have an awesome selection of everything else. (Cases, cables, PSUs, after market mod parts, etc.)

So as I was doing some cleaning up of the hard drive I had Task Manager open (I'm using Windows XP) and see that there are two "iexplore.exe" processes running at the same time; one is currently taking up around 7.9k and the other around 43k of memory. I've done some research and it seems that this problem evades most of the major AV programs. I even tried searching for iexplore.exe on my system and found 27 instances of it located below. I know it's a virus. I just want to know how to expunge it. Just killing the memory hogging version makes IE "pauses" for a moment, then it goes back to normal and then it comes back.

I had the EXACT same problem because it was labeled at the same program I had as anti-virus.
It runs a fake scan and tells me I need to buy their product for $120. It also disabled my entire deskop and Start menu, changed the desktop background to a plain black screen with red letters telling me that my computer is infected and that it's a crisis that can effect my family and work place if not dealt with. The only thing it permits to using is Internet, which it will constantly disrupt every 15 seconds or so, so you have absolutely no way of using it.

There was no way to get rid it, I checked around and tried the methods but it was one nasty virus, I ended up having to restart it to it's factory settings. I don't reccommend saving anything to a disc before you reset it either, since it contaminates everything.

What I wouldn't give to have 15 minutes alone with the fucker who programed the thing.

Here is my tips.

1. Never install a virus program. Your just asking to be infected.

2. Keep your searches local. Think of the internet like a Berlesk house. You only keep to a certain dirty girl, and never ever attempt to ride one. Since there is always a needle in
a haystack. I only use Google, and webpages I need to go to.

3. Remove anything that should not be loading at the startup.

4. When downloading certain files before opening, think about the common file sizes

2. Local searches? Like for things in your area or like things on your hard drive? Either way, the internet is about world wide communication and instant gratification. Both of which can be obtained safely through the use of common sense and a bit of precaution. Sometimes this can be aided through the use of money. Google is great, but not the only thing in the world. Also they aren't 100% immune.

4. Also a good tip, but file sizes are all over the place for video/images/audio/games now. It is a safe bet that any of them will be over 10K though.

i had a similar problem. i just restarted in safe mode and ran my virus scans there.

It seriously wouldn't even allow me to do it in safe mode, I've never had a devil virus like that.

I just had a strange problem with my computer. I left work yesterday and it was fine, when I got in this morning, the screen was black and it said Hard Drive Disk Failure....I could choose to continue with F1 or go to setup with F2, I continued and it ran system repair then offered me the option to send my computer back to when it wasn't corrupted which I did, then it restarted and it seems fine. Should I check anything out? or do you think it is okay?

Hmmmm.... I'm starting to wonder if someone isn't targeting sydlexia forum members, what with all the issues that seem to be poping up.

Anywho, your probably gonna want to scan and defragment it (sorry if this is bad info, I'm more of a pound on till it works kinda of guy).

Also, has it been making noises? If so, your hard drive is probably has one foot in the grave already (At least thats what happened to mine). If it is, back up your info, save your OS somewhere safe, and have an expert look at it. This is not something you want to deal with yourself.

Rydog, it sounds like you had a bit of corruption on your hard drive. It is possible that you had software corruption due to fragments being misplaced and the file a location table getting disorganized... or you might have bad sectors on a physically damaged drive. It is time to run a manual Check Disk and review the results.

Run the following from a command prompt:

Code:

chkdsk c: /r

Type "Y" for the questions it asks.
When the computer reboots you will need to wait and watch it go through a Check Disk.
Once the computer reboots you should click run type:

eventvwr.msc /s

Click Application and scroll down to Winlogon. Double-click it.
Find the results and look for any bad sectors or warnings.

GP, I tried to do this but when I typed in the command it told me:

Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges.
You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

Rydog, in Vista/7 you can do the following

Click the "Windows" button. This is the start menu button that has a circle now.
Type CMD
When the program is found and lists you can right click it.
Choose to run it as an Administrator.

Then run the commands.

Yeah, I actually figured it out, username's trick failed.

I ran the chkdsk and then went into the event viewer and the winlogon section seemed to be empty.

I clicked, Applications and Service Logs, then Microsoft, then Windows, the Winlogon, that had one item in it titled Operationals which is empty.

If you ran it correctly it should have fixed any issues. Just make sure you backup your files and you should be ok.

Sweet. Yeah, it def. ran fine, at the end I read a few things that said clean disk, etc. but it rebooted before I could read all the way through. Thanks for the help.

For a bit of improved drive health, now that everything seems ok, you can defragment the drive. It won't help performance as much as it will reduce the amount of work your hard drive needs to do to get your data and will add to its longevity.
