So my lessons are moving along faster than I expected and once I get good enough to justify it, I'd like to buy a new guitar. My current guitar, an Ibanez GAX30, sounds like crap and feels really cheap, which would make sense, considering it was like $299 in a kit with an amp and bag and everything. So I guess I'm looking for a good, sturdy solid body electric guitar somewhere in the $300-$450 price range. Any suggestions?

Unless you're using a little plastic baby guitar like the Monarch's henchmen, guitars aren't toys.

I think you could pick up a used hwy 1 strat in that price-range. Much better build quality than the gax, USA assembled. It'll also give you single coils, a bit different than your hum-equipped gax. I'd definitely hit the used market, as even at $500, you're not making THAT big a step-up from what you have. The highway 1 would be a guitar that would last you a long time and would give you some room to grow.

Why aren't guitars toys? Toys for grown-ups? You can play with them, you can collect them.

If your hellbent on getting a new guitar then get a fender squire there fairly priced and good for your level

Although it would be smarter just to replace the pickups and possibly the bridge on your current guitar

He'd need a bigger overhaul than that, and overhauls aren't something you should attempt if you don't know what you're doing, or at least don't have someone who does helping you. Also, I'd second the used suggestion.

To Hacker's, though, Squier doesn't have the greatest quality control, but that goes both ways. If you buy one of theirs, just make sure you play it first. Some of theirs suck, and some of theirs are on par with American Standards, you really never know with them. But if you went to the high end of your price range, maybe just a little higher, you could probably nail a used American Standard, so I'd say look around for one of those, first.

American standard...
How the hell did I forget that

I still just say buying new pickups would work for him. A new guitar can be great, but an old guitar with top notch parts can kick ass

The problem isn't age, it's shitty quality. Also I should probably mention I have no knowledge of overhauling past changing strings. Fucking small e breaking 2 times in 2 weeks.

From what you just said I would say the best course is buying some new pickups and putting them into your current guitar. Cheaper and just as good as buying a new guitar

You either learn to work a soldering iron, or you take them to the guitar store and ask them to do it, they usually will. I wouldn't reccomend it, though, it really isn't worth fixing up super-budget guitars.

Just buy a nice used one, if the pups suck you can swap them out.

If you'd prefer new, go for a G&L, an ESP, or an Ibanez. They're not very flashy, but all are very serviceable, solid-sounding guitars.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Drop G&L from the list, though. Their American stuff is some of the best guitars you can buy, their foreign made stuff... isn't.

Don't bother replacing pickups or anything gay like that. It sounds like you're just starting out. You want to buy the very best guitar you can, not a moderately good one and then replace everything on it. I've never understood that. At this point, its doubtful you know what kind of pickups you want, I doubt you know what you want out of a guitar. You should buy a guitar that isn't going to fight you to stay in tune, it should be easy to play, it shouldn't frustrate you. Skip the squire rout, you already have a guitar on par with a squire strat. A mexi-strat would even be a huge step-up from the one you have. If you can foot the bill, the used highway 1 strat/tele would at least get you in to a US assembled guitar with better hardware, wood, and pickups than even the mexi-strat. If, after playing for a bit, you get to the point where you have a more specific idea in mind for your tone, then I'd suggest looking at pickup choices. That's worthless to worry about until you are good enough for it to make a difference. Why spend $300 on a moderate guitar that's not a whole lot better than the one you have, then an extra $100-200 in parts and pickups when you could have spent $500 on a good guitar that will be a marked step-up from the one you have?

Sincerely yours,

Rory

K, jerknut's explanation was great. Here's my suggestion in simple terms:

* Just buy a new guitar, even if you have to overbudget a little.
* Your string problem can be maladied by taking mechanical pencil lead and rubbing it in the nut. This gives the string a smoother surface upon which to stretch. Also, when you give it a new string, stretch the string upwards from the guitar's face as you tighten the tuning peg.
* Don't worry about pickups and customizations for a while. I've just started customizing my SG and I've been playing for 8 years.

Stick to a fixed bridge, if you're starting out you do not want to fuck around with the god awful mess that is tuning a Floyd Rose! Oh, it's terrible!

About ESP/LTD: I'd agree, except that it's a little more specific, anything from the LTD 400 series and above will be a solid player.

ESP guitars are made in Japan using premium woods. While the production process is pretty automated, actual luthiers work the machines, and the guitars to get a lot of hands-on attention. These guitars also get much better finishes.

LTD (the higher end 400+ models) are made in Korea on pretty automated assembly lines. They use good quality woods. Not as good and expensive as ESP, but still good quality. The manual work is done by trained workers, but hardly luthiers. I'd assume there are a few luthiers on site overseeing the process, but in general, most of the people working on these guitars are just trained factory workers. These guitars get a cheaper polyeurathane finish instead of expensive laquer.

Low end LTD models (below the 300 series) are made in Indonesia. They're geared as starter instruments and are made of cheap wood and hardware. Assembly lines are pretty much all automated with little human input, and the guitars get only the hands-on treatment that they need to get them assembled.

As for the Highway 1 suggestion they are indeed nice guitars, by way of example, a close competitor would be any guitar in the Gibson Faded series, the guitars are US made, made of the same wood, use the same electronics as any standard production run Gibson except instead of using a normal finish it uses a WAY cheaper dye/ matte finish that feels almost like the wood is raw as you can see and feel the grain pattern and they are at about the same price point with some models.

Not that there's any need to list but I'll play along:

8 years playing guitar
3 years slangin' guitars ranging from $99 - $25K
Owner of a buttload of crap over the years

Don't buy a new guitar. It's a waste of money. Buy something used and you get a nice guitar, broken in and something a lot better than if you tried to buy new. Search around on Ebay and you can find some prety good deals. Gibson LP specials are one my favorite guitars. If you look hard enough, you might find one just over $500. Buy a nice guitar and watch the value increase over time.

Don't forget, Craigslist is your friend. There are always unemployed muscians selling nice equipment cheap because they need to pay their rent.
