So the DSi was too small and didn't have a long enough lasting battery. How the fuck did it take Nintendo so long to figure out that their mini screens were indeed mini? The iPhone and PSP have been out long enough that this should have been common sense.
It doesn't look like there is anything else that is extra special about this release.
As for Nintendo's falling sales... well what the fuck do they expect? If you don't release games that are good, people won't buy them. If your online offerings are as weak as your physical sales, people won't buy them. If all ports that come to your system are graphically reduced, or functionally diminished, people won't buy them. If your system runs out of space to store games, people won't buy them.
Oh wait I know, lets offer the system in Black!!!

Nintendo pisses me off with all these fucking reissues. I bought a fucking DS Lite, I just bought a DSi for my daughter, NOW they all of a sudden can make bigger screens & better battery life, etc. FUCK THAT.
If this was the original upgrade instead issuing the DSi, I would have waited and bought two of these, one for my daughter and one for me...screw that though, now i'm just gonna keep my DS Lite because 3 months after this launches they'll have something new. When Nintendo puts a out a BRAND NEW handheld, call me. Also, I was actually going to be 100% legit with my daughters DSi and buy all games for her because its her first system and it's funner to buy games and open them, etc., FUCK THAT, now I'm getting her a flashcard and teaching her piracy at the age of 7. FUCK YOU NINTENDO

Eh, I already bought a DSi back this recent spring. They need to hold back that launch for at least a few years before releasing it. Also, I'm not buying it because I already have a DSi, and I don't need a new one. That would be a waste.
On a side note, I completely skipped the DS Lite for a similar reason. I already had the original DS, so why the Hell would I need to buy something I already have?
Edit:

While it does bother me that the ports are functionally diminished, I'm not terribly annoyed by graphics reduction at all. In all honesty, I think high-definition graphics in video games are kind of overrated, especially since progressive scan pretty much makes any video game look good in any definition. High definition isn't near as important in video games to me as high definition in movies or CSI: Miami, since video games can fall back on gameplay.
Also, I thought Nintendo fixed the storage problem for the most part when they upgraded the Wii firmware to allow direct SD card access. You can pretty much buy a decent SD card for cheap nowadays.

The DSi was perfect. Why do we need bigger screens? I bet they come at the expense of pratical portability.

I thought I was the only one in this thread that was happy with the current DSi. I'm glad I'm not alone.
And yeah, I never thought of that. It'll never be as big as the Game Gear, though, even though I liked it.

The iPhone screen isn't significantly bigger than a DSi screen. Wider perhaps.
Also, the iPhone is a TERRIBLE fucking gaming system. It has two interface options: touch and tilt. It's what the DS would have been if Nintendo hadn't hedged their bets and included GBA controls and compatibility. And guess what? Almost every iPhone game is terrible. It is quite possibly the worst gaming library ever. There is no depth, no quality control, no anything. Compared to the iPhone, the Atari Jaguar's library looks like the PS2 library. Let us NEVER bring up the iPhone in a debate about portable gaming screen sizes again.

Copy-pasted from other forum:
I'll buy it when they get flashcards running on it since they're tightening up the piracy protection even more. I have DS-philia and am gonna have to get this at one point even though I already have a DSi. Have to.
Damn you, Nintendo.
EDIT: Also, fuck the iPhone, it's taking all the good ideas away. That MGS game shoulda been on DSiWare.

I never said I liked the iPhone. In fact I have yet to buy one. I do however think the size is a good size.
Playing the DS with one hand while using the pen to control anything is a pain in the ass and the size of the system and clam-shell design is awkward.

Yes, the iPhone is a great gaming device.
Wouldn't really call it a system though.

I never liked the DSi from the get go. The DS lite was fine and didn't really need a superfluous upgrade to include a ridiculous camera ("omg I can totally smudge my friendz faces!") and the removal of backward compatibility. Sorry, but that trade off seems kind of stupid. And so far, the only DSi exclusive game looks like a shallow baby's toy and seems that at this rate, by the time there is a DSi library, we'll be onto the next gen anyway.

I also skipped getting a Lite since I had the old brick DS. I'm sort of annoyed they've already got a new model ready and waiting to come down the pipes less than a year from the DSi's release.

Slightly off-topic: Maybe Nintendo's flagging sales will mean they'll have to dip into shit from their back catalog that people actually give a shit about.
Like fucking Earthbound. I'd rather pay even $10 as WiiWare or an SNES Virtual Console release than spend $80 to have it on the original SNES again.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

This seems rather sudden. The DSi is pretty damn new as it is. It seems like a pretty bad idea to release a different variation when the original has barely had time to get on it's feet.

Maybe it'll mean a price drop on VC/WiiWare.
They recently released the arcade version of Altered Beast for $10. The Genesis version is virtually identical, and the price point on Genesis games is $8. And it was a fucking VC title. Does Nintendo think we're stupid?

That's because the DSi is just a smoke and mirrors tactic to make you think it's an upgrade while they work on the next gen console. It has no substance, and Nintendo has no real desire to make DSi exclusive games. That's just a ploy to get dumb people to buy the DS again.
If you look at the DSi's "features", it's not an upgrade at all over the DS lite and is just a ploy for Nintendo to generate some income in the downtime between consoles.
So I agree with everyone here that they should stop focusing on consoles for a year or so and give us some more games. That's where their bread is butttered. It almost smacks of fear that the other two companies are rapidly overtaking them, so they're scrambling.

Yes, but I found it to be extremely similar to the DS Lite. Also the screen on an iPhone seems huge compared to the one on a DS of any size.

I saw that too. That's why I picked up the Sega Collection for PS3 for 12 bucks. Got em both and a shit load of other games as well.

Jesus Christ. The stylus for the DSi XL looks fucking awful.
Also, here's the thing: unless they increased the resolution at which games can run, the bigger screen will make the games look awful. You ever try running a GBA emulator at fullscreen? It's fucking gross. It's like staring at a dead rape victim.
Nintendo knew what they were doing with the DSi. They made the screen just big enough that games wouldn't look like ass. But if you were to run say, any Castlevania DS on the DSi XL, you'd immediately notice the lack of detail in any sprite that wasn't gigantic, particularly in the main characters.

The LL is just way too big. It's bigger than the DS Phat.
Also, I've seen screen comparisons running Mario and Luigi 3, and guess what? The image doesn't look so good. There's a fair amount of distortion going on, due to the way that the DSi LL increases image size. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like my pixels all jaggedy-edged when they're clearly smooth running on the original system.
However, the reason they're releasing this is clear. The target audience is older people and those with bad eyesight, who requested a larger screen because reading the text on the other DS systems was difficult. This is also why it comes with a stylus the size of a PEN.
