So, my 10 year high school reunion is coming up, and I don't particularly want to go. I went to my 5 year high school reunion, and it was a blast. We were all still young, so it was at a bar in Boston. Most of us were fresh out of college, finising up college, or in grad school. There was no need to justify our life choices to others, no sense of competition, because we were all still forging our paths.

Well, here comes the 10 year reunion, and once again it's a bar in Boston. It's a slightly classier one, but it's s till a bar: http://www.feltclubboston.com/

Only now we're fucking old. Too fucking old to be having our reunion at some trendy Boston hotspot. People are married now. People have kids now. People own houses now. We have reached the stage where our reunions should be held at kitschy locations like the Knights of Columbus, a Marriott function room, or the high school itself. The whole thing reeks of a sad attempt to hold on to faded youth. And really, isn't that the point of a high school reunion? Either that, or exaggerating about how awesome your life is now, listening to other people do the same, and trying to outdo each other. I'm not really interested in doing either, so I don't really see the point of going.

Also, it's schedule to go until 2 AM. Are they out of their fucking minds? Who in the hell wants to go to a high school reunion until 2 AM!? That's fucking ridiculous.

mine should be coming up in the next year (class of 2000) and i dont have any plans to go. i havent 'done anything' w/my life, according to their standards, and i dont want to be judged or stared at. i wouldnt mind going since my class had a lot of nice trim/tail/ass. so, checking out some milfs would be nice.

I'm also class of 2000 and have no intention of going to mine next year. I didn't go to the 5 year ruining, and I have no desire to go to any subsequent reunions.

Also, the fact that it's at a bar makes it extra retarded, because you have to throw a lot of money around to make sure everyone knows you're doing well for yourself.

I'm with you 100% Syd. People from my high school did our 10 year reunion last year (totally unofficial as I guess my school doesn't do official ones) and they scheduled to hold it at a sports bar which was basically the trendy place to be 5 years ago in my area. I didn't have any interest in it at all, because having a wife and child myself, the whole thing just felt weird. People go to bars to meet other people and get laid.
We're 28 years old now with families and young children, should we really be holding this thing at a fucking bar? How lame. Additionally they were charging ticket prices just to be allowed inside and have the opportunity to see these people you left behind 10 years ago you never knew you wanted to see again.

Not to mention the people putting it on were the sort of go-getter, class president type kids in high school who were always a little douchey and totally not fun to be around, so that added another dimension of, "no thanks".

they are probably holding the reunion at the bar because they dont expect many people to go, so they figured a small venue would be easier to handle vs a large one.

The answer is yes. Get drunk and write an article. I'm making an emphasis on getting drunk.

Fuck high school reunions, I'll never go to one. I actually don't like too many people from my class. I had more friends in the classes above and below me than my class (2001)

This, and most of the friends that I did make in my own class I can reach elsewhere.

Syd,

Mine is the day after Thanksgiving and is at a bar.

It isn't even a nice or fun bar. It is a shitty bar that no one gives a fuck about. It isn't in a city, they are charging $40 per person for 3 hours. FUCKING LAME.

Yet, I will be going. Why? Because contrary to the popular belief that a reunion is all about showing your classmates what you can do with your life out of school, there is something special about inviting your memories of the past to come out of hiding. Some are good, some are bad, but all around it is an experience that can't be duplicated in other ways. It is worth it just to have that feeling even if it is just for a few hours. Once you are done, feel free to bitch about it, or brag about how wonderful the experience was. Don't be the guy who regretted going.

Also, remember it isn't just about what you experience. To someone else, perhaps you were the person who they forgot and will be excited to remember.

I feel like Facebook has destroyed the need for class reunions.

Well what hasn't it destroyed? You should still go and get drunk.

Hah, I can understand that a bit, but it hasn't. It just means some people will be more familiar than others at the reunion. After the reunion I bet you will get about 100 more invites though.

I actually found out yesterday that I missed my high school reunion. All it did, however, was serve to make me feel old as fuck. Yes, here I am, ten years out of high school, when it really doesn't feel like that long ago. Then again, anyone I knew worth talking to in high school is still, ten years later, still worth talking to. Everyone else never even seemed to leave the state, instead relocating to Baton Rouge or New Orleans.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

I just clicked "No" on the Facebook invite. I could always change it, I suppose, but short of someone messaging me and being like "Why aren't you going? I really wanted to see you.", that's probably not happening.

The only reason you would want to go is if you want to see any of those people. If you don't, then don't go. I got along with the class above me way better than my own so I probably won't go to my 10 year reunion in 2 years.

It's just not my idea of what a class reunion should be. To me, a class reunion should be like the one in Grosse Point Blank. It should be held in the high school cafeteria or gym, and they should hire a bartender and a DJ. It should be equal parts awkward, fun, pathetic, and nostalgic.

But sitting in a bar/club paying way too much for drinks and listening to Britney, Lady Gaga, Fergie, and a bunch of crappy new hip-hop singles? Fuck that. I could do that ANY fucking night, and I choose not to.

Yeah you're supposed to listen to all the crappy hip-hop singles from 99. And Creed.
I just missed my reunion. It was on Friday, and I figured that most people I still give a shit about, I speak to either in person or the internets. Plus ours was so cheap it was at the homecoming game and they merely sectioned a part off and charged us extra to get in. Fuck that.

wow that sounds very very crappy in terms of a reunion.

Exactly! And the Spice Girls! And everyone collectively roll their eyes, but secretly enjoy it on some level.

You're just not going because you know it will be nothing like Martin Blank's High School Reunion, and that you will have no chance to kill someone and throw them into a boiler.
