I don't know if this is on the nets yet so I will just summerize the article in the newspaper

A DUI checkpoint was set up in a Utah town. Corperal josh rowell was pulling the cars over and checking for the usual things when he pulls over a kid who he has never seen before. He asks for the kids licence and when the kid admits he doesn't have one the cop issues him a ticket. This kid happens to be the mayors son

When they hit a slow point Rowell goes over to talk to the court clerk and then notices the cheif is gone. The clerk tells him that the chei is talking to the mayor who is pissed. So rowell goes over and the mayor fires him for ticketing his son. The mayor later cools down and tells rowell that he is suspended until further notice.
-----------------

Can you say bullshit?
The kid was breaking the law and the cop was just doing his job. What the mayor did is just selfish and bullshit. Being the mayor or the son does not grant you immunity from the law

it is BS. but shit like this happens all the time.

when someone gets a DUI in AZ, they have to go to 'tent city.' basically, its out in the desert and there are a bunch of tents and guards. its like camping, but in the middle of the desert and its hot as fuck. and you have to wear pink uniforms.

anyhow, when Charles Barkley got his DUI, he didnt have to spend time in tent city. actually, he spent some time but he was given access to his own tent, so he didnt have to mingle w/the general populace and he was given other privileges other inmates were not.

same thing w/Paris Hilton. she was given a new uniform that she could either choose to wear or not wear. she was given her own cell, her own bathroom, her own guard. it was BS.

That's bull crap. I'm studying Criminal Justice right now and I'm starting to see where the system can fail. Since when did law enforcement become influenced by political power?

The cop will have a hard time finding another job, however the person who fired him will probably not keep their job either.

Sad to say but law enforcement has been run by politicians for a long long time. You see variations of this from small town to big cities, from relatively small example's like this to big things like manslaughter/ rape etc.

Sorry, I read it as though he was fired. He was simply suspended. Also the Mayor claims there is some other part to this story.

I'm not sure if it is true or not, however the Mayor probably should have avoided being the one involved with this decision.

Odds are high that the Mayor bought the car for the little shit, so he should catch flack for furnishing an automobile to a kid he knows doesn't have a license.

What I want to know is...what kind of bullshit state is Utah where you can drive without a license and get away with just a ticket.

The two states I've lived in, you go to jail for that.

Just a nitpick, but elected officials generally do have immunity from the law, or at least so far as it pertains to their jobs. And more than one elected official has managed to extend it out to traffic tickets.

This should absolutely not apply to family members however.

My mom was pulled over when she didn't have her license on her before and got a ticket. I think it's a ticket if your license isn't on you, but you get arrested if you don't have a license.

arizona and california law dictate that your car be impounded for 30 days if you drive w/out a license

The question is does "drive without a license" mean drive without your license present or drive without having a license issued to you? I would postulate that, for that severe a penalty, it means the latter.

Well, if the cop gave them a ticket for simply not having the driver's license on them, I'd say they're kind of being a dickhead even if it's not the Mayor's son. If you can identify the driver of the car well enough to learn that they do indeed have a license, you should just let them go.

I think the issue may not be so much "You gave my son a ticket" as "You gave my son a ticket for THIS piddling bullshit?"

Working for the thruway in NY, if a patron doesn't have thier licsense when they have no money or try to pay with a check, then I have to call the troopers. If they find money before the trooper arrives then they are free to go and the trooper has their orders recalled. If not then, the cop will show up and assess the situation, and issues tickets when needed.

I live in WA and I got a buddie that isn't allowed to drive for like seven years because he got pulled over multiple times when he didn't have a valid license. The first few times they gave him tickets. The final time they impounded his car. He'd probably would have done alright if he had bothered to show up to any of court dates, but he never did.

He still drives around. Confused

In my opinion, those who work for their position should have more power as opposed to those who simply have more money or connections. Sadly, this is not the case.

i think barkley deserves the treatment, considering all he's done for the human race.

Unfortunately, money has been the major factor in political careers since the beginning of civilization.

UPDATE:
http://www.abc4.com/content/news/state/story/Mayor-in-hot-water-for-suspending-officer-who/iwB75tDvUEqeekpGDp_W3A.cspx

Turns out that the officer paid for part of his training to become a cop. Holy fuck... that dude just wants to be an honest fucking cop. The town is rallying behind him too.
