I felt for the kid, but I kinda felt like it was a setup from the get-go. I still found myself worried on the chance, but as soon as I heard that the kid wasn't in the balloon, I thought "OK, this is a goddamn publicity stunt."

I wish the kid no harm. If the parents were so eager to be famous, he should've just shoved a bottle up his ass and posted it to 4chan. He'd get all the attention he'd ever want.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

I've always wondered how maladjusted a child who grew up in a home where all the TVs were upside would be.

Quote:
Woman slams baby's head into ground

Mount Vernon, NY -- Police in Mount Vernon say a naked, and emotionally disturbed woman repeatedly slammed her baby's head into the sidewalk.
It happened around 1:40 Friday afternoon outside East Lincoln Avenue.
When police arrived, the injured baby boy was handed over to Mount Vernon Police Commissioner, David Chong.
The 6 month old baby was then rushed to Mount Vernon Hospital, and later transferred to the Westchester Medical Center trauma unit.
He is currently in critical condition.
The baby's mother was taken into custody.
Her mental condition is also being evaluated.
The police commissioner, who was very shaken up following the incident said "no normal person slams their baby's head into the ground repeatedly like this."

Apparently parents admit to hoax:

Nov. 12) -- The Colorado parents in last month's notorious "balloon boy" case will plead guilty to offenses for creating a hoax that their son had flown away in a large balloon.
Richard and Mayumi Heene are to plead Friday morning in Larimer County court, according to a statement issued by Richard Heene's attorney.

Mayumi Heene is expected to plead guilty to an offense of false reporting to authorities, a misdemeanor of the lowest level, according to the attorney.
Richard Heene is expected to plead guilty to a felony offense of attempting to influence a public servant.

Though the Heenes could receive jail time for the charges, the prosecutor has recommended probation, Richard Heene's attorney said.
The threat of deportation for Mayumi Heene was a factor in the plea deal negotiation, the attorney's statement said.

"Mayumi Heene is a citizen of Japan. As such, any felony conviction or certain misdemeanors would result in her deportation, even though her husband and children are Americans," the statement said.
"It is supremely ironic that law enforcement has expressed such grave concern over the welfare of the children, but it was ultimately the threat of taking the children's mother from the family and deporting her to Japan which fueled this deal."
Prosecutors in the case could not be reached for comment Thursday morning.

On Oct. 16, a large silver balloon came loose from moorings in the Heenes' yard and floated over Colorado. Mayumi Heene called 911 and said the couple's 6-year-old son, Falcon, was inside the craft.
Millions of people across the country watched the saga on television for nearly two hours as military aircraft tracked the balloon in the air and rescuers chased it on the ground.
Mayumi Heene later admitted the whole thing was a hoax and that Falcon was safe in their home the entire time, authorities said.

Court documents released last month said the couple hatched the plan about two weeks before the incident and "instructed their three children to lie to authorities as well as the media regarding this hoax."

Their motive? To "make the Heene family more marketable for future media interests," the documents said.

You know, if this family of dipshits had any brains in their skulls at all, what they'd have done is let it go, watch it float away, and let the conspiracy theorists do the rest. You get enough nutjob wackos reporting a real UFO to the authorities, someone's going to investigate. Let them find it, report on it, THEN say it was yours. Instant publicity, and the only fine you may have to worry about is littering.

I found it quite odd that deportation would be a factor; based on everything I've ever seen about this family of assholes, the mother is the most sensical one. I'd also venture to think that the husband (who's known for marrying her mostly because Asian women are stereotypically passive and submissive) had forced her into admitting the hoax, knowing the legal ball was dropping.
