Erm, follow up stupid question...
I use McAfee because I get it free through my ISP. How can you tell if you have 64 bit or not? Do you have to request it specifically?

Oh and Windows 7 is out.
Got mine through the deal.
Downloading now! 50%.
Spent the extra 6 bucks to get a disk shipped to me in the mail and free downloads if I want backups.

I've been getting updates and add-ons for some programs. So now a couple programs (like firefox) are all aero as well.
Love being able to see through things. Plus everything is super snappy and smooth.
much better than vista

Are there by chance, any deals for the full version rather than the upgrade?

Well why do we even need Vista again?
To run another version of Microsoft 2000, 2003, 2007 or something else right?
I mean come on. I watched a person brought a new laptop the other day for the soul purpose of
using word.
Is spell checking that big a deal?

I am so Confused. Are you discussing Office and Vista? We are talking about Windows 7 here. The operating system has nothing to do with the productivity suite.
As for someone who buys a laptop to type a paper. OH MY GOD!!! HOW DARE THEY! What the fuck do you think people write papers on? They don't type on stone slabs or write short hand with number two pencils on legal pads. If you need a new computer, you need a new computer, right now laptops outsell desktops and it just so happens that you need a word processing package to properly format a document.

Or need to read other documents or have people read yours. I realize OpenOffice can export into Word compatible files, but sometimes you just need to conform.

Ok, so the difference between a Whopper and a Double Whopper is just the extra patty of meat.
Nutritional content of a Whopper:
640 calories
40g fat
11g saturated fat
1.5 trans fat
75mg cholesterol
51g carbs
11g sugar
29g protein
1020mg sodium
Nutritional content of a Double Whopper
920 calories
58g fat
19g saturated fat
2.5g trans fat
140mg cholesterol
51g carbs
11g sugar
48g protein
1090mg sodium
Deduced single patty content
280 calories
18g fat
8g saturated fat
1 trans fat
65mg cholesterol
0 carbs
0 sugar
19g protein
70mg sodium
Single Whopper + 6x Patties = Windows 7 Burger
2320 calories
148g fat
59g saturated fat
7.5g trans fat
465mg cholesterol
51g carbs
11g sugar
174g protein
1440mg sodium
Fucking gross.

So has anyone here used Windows 7 yet? I just got a laptop and it has Windows 7 on it and it seems alright and stuff, but a few things are bugging me. How much can I customize it to make things like older versions of windows, particularly the task bar? Also, why in the fuck do I have 50+ processes running? Is that a laptop thing, a Windows 7 thing, or an HP thing? The computer is brand new, right out of the box, so I was expecting to see like 18-20 processes going before I started installing shit.

1. Has anyone here used Windows 7 yet?
Did you read any of the comments?
2. How-to to make it old. But why do that when you can make it EVEN BETTER?
3. I think it's a windows thing, honestly. Vista had shittons, 7 has shittons even right out of the box. You can get rid of a lot of them, though.

Jeebus, welcome to a thread that has multiple pages. Read them.
As for the processes, you are not running Windows XP or any derivative of it. Do NOT fuck with the processes. How it comes out of the box is functional. I have yet to see guides telling people how to hack the shit out of Windows 7 to gain performance because it has for the most part been properly tweaked. Make sure you have the minimum system requirements and current drivers. Then enjoy the computer.
The classic start menu is an option, but why would you use it? The new one is one of the best things to ever be changed in Windows.
If you must fuck with the machine I suggest you pick up this month's issue of MaximumPC.
It will be here in 1 month: http://www.maximumpc.com/articles/pdf_archives
I cannot stress enough that this is NOT Windows XP and you should stop thinking of it as such immediately or you will miss out on the fact that it is faster, more reliable, and has some decent bells and whistles that make it a very capable OS.

GP, I just read through the thread and it didn't really seem to answer my questions in any non-completely fucking vague terms. It's definitely fast and everything, I was just surprised and how much stuff was running. As for the start menu, it's more the task bar that's bothering me. I fixed one of the problems, but I dislike that quicklaunch icons get replaced with the tab for that program on the task bar. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I find it horribly distracting. Also, I'm not a big fan of how the alt+tab function works now.
Maybe if I had somewhere to use the laptop where I could plug a USB mouse in instead of using the touchpad the minor aesthetic things wouldn't be bothering me as much, but I'm still happy with the system and it's just a matter of getting used to both the computer and OS at the same time. Too much change at once for an old man.

Windows 7 huh.
My laptop I just got last summer came with a free upgrade for Windows 7 when it came out, and now I'm sitting here debating if I want to upgrade or not.
I understand the whole urge for the latest & greatest (my dad is like that) but I'm looking at it from the angle of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I managed to get all my games working just fine on Vista (after hacking a few of them, what an adventure that was). Everything runs (and runs well!) and I just guess I'm having problems justifying the effort of backing everything up and upgrading to a whole new operating system when I'm functioning fine with the old one.
Does it have some kind of insane panty-wetting features that'll make me see all the effort as worthwhile? I daresay I've finally gotten comfortable with Vista and am a tiny bit sad at the thought of letting it go. :/
I might need to track down GPFontaine for some tech advice on this one.

Fortunately I have a student email, unfortunately my mini 9 only has a 16gb ssd. Time to upgrade to the 32gb ssd!
