Hi Everyone,

First, I couldn't find my fan forum and was a little hurt to see Uwe has one. But then again, he makes bigger and more commercial films than I. So I rather pathetically am creating my own thread.

Mainly, I wanted to invite everyone to view the first uploaded clip for my upcoming "opus" "Tales of an Ancient Empire". Take a look and let me know your thought. This way you have a chance (however slim) to stop me from making Tales into one of my traditional crap movies. I know its a long shot but saving someone's brain is in your sweaty hands.

http://www.vimeo.com/7028173

That's where it is and there will be others later this week. So please, take a moment to view and review...however cruel. Thanks in advance to my fans (echoing in an empty theater).

Best,
Albert

Actually, I did see the one thread bearing my name where Tebor tried to wrap his mind around the riddle that is me:

Quote:
Posted: Sep 13 2006 01:39 am

I bought "The Sword and the Sorcerer" for $5 and I was surprised to see Albert Pyun's name on this. Actually I wasn't that surprised, the film is pretty terrible.

But that forced me to look at his IMDB resume and got depressed at the number of films of his I've seen. I also read his bio which kissed his ass. It blamed the bad quality of his films to his producers (which is a valid argument).

I don't know how Pyun has a career. I was analyzing "Mean Guns" a few nights ago (before I knew he directed it), because the movie was so visually appalling I had to figure out what the director was thinking. I pointed out no less than three dozen poor decisions that the director made in the last hour of the film.

That's when it bugged me.This guy probably never went to film school (but apparently studied under ToshirĂ´ Mifune and Akira fucking Kurosawa) and he has nearly 40 films under his belt in just over 20 years! How does he do it?

Granted most people hate him and his films are terrible, but I seem to meet a lot of filmmakers who are twice as talented and have made only one film (last week's encounter with Paul Peditto).

This riddle of Pyun boggles my mind. I don't understand this guy.

Uwe Boll, you have a lot to live up to!

It is a perplexing riddle...how the hell did I get a career? 51 features, music videos and even a network episodic. 29 steady years of feature filmmaking. 41 continuous years if you count the commercials and docs I did in Hawaii. WTF. I know. I lay awake at nights pondering the same riddle. But all I can say is all I have ever wanted to do was make movies. Shorts, docs, anything. I loved it and I've been, for whatever reason, very lucky to have been making films since I was ten and professionally since I was 14 (as a free intern at local Honolulu production houses).

You're right, no film school at all. Not even AV in High School. I just made movies because I loved it. Its never easy and with my peculiar vision of things, I've had many films taken from me a recut. So more of my films are recuts that my cut. Such is life. I move on. But I do try with each film to give it a little different spin and I try very hard to add some level of artistry even if its lost in the final cut (such as I shoot all my films in 2:35 and yet most are onl seen in pan and scan 4:3).

I know that doesn't come close to solving the riddle. I'm not sure it can be solved.

Best,
Albert

If you are really Albert Pyun, I would just like to say that Brainsmasher was freaking awesome.

Yes, unfortunately for every here on your forums...its me.

Thanks for the kind words about Brainsmasher. That's actually a film that has my cut intact. For better or worse, that's the film I wanted to make. Except I not sure how many have seen it widescreen 2:35.

Check out the Tales scene and let me know what you think Syd.

Best,
Albert

Well, the IP address is coming out of Herndon, VA. So if that's where the movie is being shot, then I guess it could really be him.

Herdon, VA?

Naw. I'm doing post here in Los Angeles, CA. Can't be an IP address in Virginia...can it?

It's really me. I think.

Dear Mr. Albert Pyun,

Thank you for trying to answer my riddle. You say you were very lucky, but I think there was more to it than that. I wrote a thesis paper trying to unravel that mystery and I think I left you a voicemail once about it (there was no voice confirming it was your phone, merely a robotic voice asking to leave a message after the beep). At the end of that 12 page odyssey, I think I was as mystified as you are now. I will continue to search for an answer so you won't have to; you can just worry about continuing to make movies for Nu Image.

Anyway, whether you are the real Albert Pyun or not, I don't think it matters. Any lover of film has an Albert Pyun in their heart.

Best regards,
~ Tebor

I believe he was filming in Hollywood, CA. But I'd say if it was him and in VA, he's on vacation.

Fair enough. One IP Whois site gave me VA, another gave me Thousand Oaks, CA.

But the questions remain, why here, why now why us? Are we your chosen ones?

I've been found by much more obscure industry professionals through Google search. A writer on "Supernatural" actually commented on an old blog I had that I had written about one of his co-workers. If SydLexia is coming up on a top Google search, I'd call that a job well done.

Hi Tebor,

I'd love to read the thesis. It would help me sleep at nights!

And no more Nu Image. Ticker was it. I've known Avi Lerner for more than 20 years. He's a nice man but his middle managers and creative execs are horrible. Your words are very kind. Bottomline is I am lucky just to be doing what I love. I'm grateful, believe me.

I am real and I am in my cutting room in Thousand Oaks, CA working on Tales edit. Give me some feedback on the clip, willya?

Best,
Albert

Well, its the reference to Brainsmasher that got me here in a hot flash. Hopefully, Tales will get the same love...well, I know that might be delusional on my part.

Tebor - is your thesis online? Love to read it.

Albert

Hey Mr. P, great to have you here!

Just in time for Jeebus to ban you for double posting, of course, but it was nice while it lasted. Laughing

Not familiar with him, but I saw that he made Captain America, which makes me want to ask why Red Skull was given a regular face later in the movie.

It was scripted that way. Because the way it was constructed, the Red Skull needed to move freely in the world. The writer, Stephen Tolkin, had written a very good script that we just didn't have the money to shoot because the financing fell out with a bank in London. That impacted the number of Red Skull scenes as well as the set up for the "human" face. Sorry.

Oh god I remember that Captain America movie...awesomely hilarious. I did feel bad that the Captain spent most of his time running away from the bad guys and getting his ass whupped though. Not exactly the fearless hero I loved from the comics. Confused

Before I talk about the clip:

Albert, I'm going to be honest and admit that I flat out hated "Left for Dead". I thought it was a good idea before it came out, I had just 're-discovered' you, you were giving interviews to sites like Ain't It Cool News which led me to believe you were evolving into the next phase in your career, so I was looking forward to it quite a bit. But the film ended up being a mess in my opinion. I thought it was dull, the digital photography hurt the picture, the script lacked any semblance of logic, and the action sequences just weren't that exciting. Others can say what they will, but I know when I think Pyun, I think action that's usually pretty impressive - Not the case with "Dead". Cowgirls vs. a ghost more or less is that logline and the film just didn't feel like it took advantage of the material. I don't mean to sound like a prick, but that's what I thought when I rented that movie.

Since then I've been following "Tales of an Ancient Empire" pretty closely. Why? "Sword and the Sorcerer", not a great movie, but it was pure in the genre that it was in. That genre doesn't exist today and, even more fanboy-ish, the end of "Sword" promised a sequel... I've been waiting for that.

Then the cast for the film was assembled and it's extremely impressive. No matter what I'm seeing "Ancient Empire", it has everything going for it.

Off the actual clip:

The excerpt is a strange choice to highlight. It's a scene of two characters talking. Right away the digital photography captured my attention; this is not going to look like the first one.

Kevin Sorbo is an incredibly gifted actor for what he does, because I absolutely buy him in the role. His says each line believably and with a certain playfulness to it that makes it sound natural and not like lines. The actress doesn't have the same handle (or rather experience) with it.

Now, I watched the clip twice. The first time I was distracted by the above and came away thinking: That's a really dull clip to highlight what could be Pyun's best film to date. So I had to watch it again.

My new impressions is that the tone is actually dead on. This feels like a historical fantasy film. I cannot express how much I've been dying to see a halfway decent sword and sorcery movie lately. The second thing I noticed is how much talking there is. Someone really cared about this script, which I think is a real strength for the film. There's a lot of playful banter that has the right tone. As long as the actors can do their job, this could be a lot of fun.

The set looks good, the costumes are too clean in my opinion (but that's a nitpick), the music I hope is temp because it isn't quite doing it for me.

Those were my impressions from the 2 minute clip. Of course I want to see more... But for what it is, I am very relieved that this will not be like "Left For Dead".

And, I do have to ask, I actually wrote a screenplay for you last year which was my kind of Kill Bill-esque homage to Pyun; how would I go about getting that to you? I know, I know, no one likes being solicited, but I do have to ask. Wink

It is not online although I had planned to upload it with pictures and clips. As far as I'm concerned, it is your right to read it. As I mentioned, I even tried to call you using a number I stumbled upon in my research in an off chance I could get an interview with you. At that time of course, I would've spent most of the interview talking about "Nemesis III: Time Lapse" and "Nemesis 4: Death Angel".

Thanks for the feedback on the clip. Its very helpful to have as we shape.

Yeah, Left For Dead didn't quite come together as I'd hoped. The budget was so limited (less than a $100,000) that there wasn't time to refine. It was really the first film I shoot in HD (other than Invasion which was really just a police dashcam POV film) and I learned a lot. It can't be shot like its 35mm and I think Tales reflects this knowledge gained.

The strength of Tales is the screenplay.

I know the costumes are clean. That's a product of budget (can't make doubles and triples of the costumes) and the fact I'm trying to make a throwback fantasy adventure akin to Lester's Three Muskeeteers and The Wind and the Lion. A sort of idealized world with richly designed costumes (as much budget allows). People get dirty (and bloody) as we get into the third act.

I think its really hard for a young American actress to take on a role like this. We tried casting British and Australian actresses but they just didn't seem to have the humor and fun Melissa brings to the film. I think she's got a larger than life presence and is wholly believable as a sheltered princess thrust into the world at large. It might also be noted, in terms of her character, that the scene comes 30 minutes into the film where she has already endured the slaying of her sister the Queen, the discovery she is a bastard and not the King's child, that her real father lives but no one knows where, the destruction of her royal city, a violent ship wreck, a rape attempt and the shell shock that comes from having brutally killed 8 men hand to hand.

As for your script, Tebor, please email it to: pyunfilm@gmail.com

Best,
Albert

Do you have any good Steven Seagal stories from the set of Ticker? There have been rumors for years that he likes to rewrite scenes and is not especially gracious or mature when he's told no. Do you have any stories that prove or disprove these rumors?

Steven didn't ask for any rewrites or changes. He was quite cooperative. Only drag was how butchered the budget and film got by Nu Image. They cut us so severely that I told them we had to cut out all the action (film was shot in 11 days). They shrugged. It wasn't later until I had quit the picture during editing that I found out they intended on adding a bunch of stock action footage fro their older movies. Something thats a bit of standard practice with them.

My first cut was pretty rough and we immediately didn't see eye to eye, so I left.

Albert
