FNJ, if you post it up on a web server and give me the URL I'll take a look at the PSD. If each object is a layer, it is as simple as adding a mask and color filter.

Personally, I'd make the purple parts the matching dark gray of the site's background, so it matches better.

Except that it's surrounded by a gray background, so that would look dumb.

I need to download the fonts to do any font editing, and also my selection method left a border (which is easily removed, unless you like that sort of thing).
Other than that, this is what the color change would look like.

The darker purple contrasts better with the green. Try basic blue. Also, why did you change the border color?

Well, I've experimented with changing the purple to an actual shade of the site's purple. Below it, I replaced the light gray with white (the site's text color).
BTW: it's really freaky that the original banner ends in .gif but is actually a PNG. I took that you wanted a GIF, so that's what I gave you. It's a lot smaller, anyway. I had to do it in the Gimp, which meant redoing the glow/border effects. If they look too different, someone else can redo the coloring: I used #4c3380 for the purple (50% brightness of #9966ff).
ETA: Oops, I took the border off. Here ya go.
Still, I conferred with my sister, and we both prefer the white one without a border. YMMV.
I'll post the modified PSD in a minute. Oh, and emaoil me if the images go down. I'm trying out a host.

That kinda hurts my eyes, smooth it up a little. But really I like the current one. It DOES remind me of "Day of the Tentacle".

Yeah, the smoothing is the part I'm having trouble with. I'm giving up the good computer tonight, so someone else will have to take that on, if they want.
I just don't like the purple in the original--I think my coloring looks better, as it still matches the site. Consider my examples just a mock up.
Oh, and here's a link to the PSD I used. (I hope Photoshop is more compatible with the Gimp than vice versa.) Having a screenshot of the site in the background helps with determining the coloring.

I think it should stay as is. As Knyte pointed out, the current color scheme is reminiscent of Purple Tentacle, which is completely awesome.

Well, I must admit it looks better now, with the border. It helps separate it off, so the difference in color doesn't look like a mistake. But I still think it could use a little something else. If recoloring is out of the question, how about rounding the corners a little bit, and making the border a bit wider?
Well, I tried it, but it isn't that great.
(Note, I'll probably kill my images after a bit if everyone agrees they don't like them.)

You probably should replace the image with a real GIF. Some browsers could break. Plus it's more than 4 times smaller.

Sorry for the delay in my response, life has been... complicated for the last week. I'll work on some additional options soon.
Syd, I didn't mean to alter the border, it was the effect I used to change the background. I just didn't have any more time to work on it at that moment so I posted it semi-unfinished. I am going to see if I can create a PSD file that has more layers that can be altered and played with. Perhaps even a PNG24 with a website that allows for changing color background so that you can see it with whatever color you want.
Here is something more of a mix between the old and new:

its weird that it would be a png labeled as a gif. I have no idea how that might have happened. I normally save everything as a png. were you editing off of the image that I posted or the psd that I uploaded?
