I love MST3K and always have. I have every episode on videotape and am currently working on getting them all on DVD too. Basically, from what I've experienced over the years, the only people that hate the show are those who don't get the references since 70% of the jokes are referential. It's pretty simple really, if you don't know who Joe Don Baker and Rae Dawn Chong are, then you won't get those jokes, and thus, think it "stupid" or "moronic". But if you do know the references, you will get the jokes, and getting it makes you feel almost part of an exclusive club, or that they made that joke just for you, which is awesome.

MST3K is not a show for the dimwitted and slow amongst us.

As for Rifftrax, I agree with Jeebus that it's not nearly as much fun riffing on big budget, mainstream movies. Half of the charm of MST3K was that they were riffing on really bad B movies that were pretty funny on their own. They really should go back to B movies, and that way, don't have to worry about huge rights costs.

Well they still do, at least the funny ones do. It's called Cinematic Titanic, and they pay for rights to bad movies still. Of course, because of the popularity of MST3K it costs a lot more money to get the rights to do it (Which is also why most of the episodes of the show aren't on DVD, the companies want too much money now).

And you know, not only do I not really like the idea of Rifftrax (And think it's the least funny cast members), but it's so cold and impersonal. They showed the Rifftrax for Plan 9 From Outer Space (Ooh, that's an original choice!) in theaters for one day only, and have brought it back by popular demand. But that's it, you pay to go to the theater and watch an episode of this. Cinematic Titanic, on the other hand, goes on tour and does this live. They're mic'ed at the front of the theater and are in the room with you for the whole movie. They were in the area for two days recently and even did a different movie each night. Also, before the movie, TV's Frank did about 20-30 minutes of standup which I hear was phenomenal.

I'm not a fan of Cinematic Titanic. I think there are too many people involved, and to me, they were the least funny cast members of MST3K. Mary Jo Pehl drives me crazy, and I am one of the few who prefers Mike to Joel. To me, the dream team is Mike, Kevin, and Bill who just happen to be the three guys who do Rifftrax, but it's wasted because Rifftrax is doing it wrong. I don't want to watch riffs on modern movies. So it's annoying for me as I don't like either side project for different reasons.

I do love Frank though so that might make up for my dislike of Mary Jo...

God, I love MST3K and have seen (and own) every episode (even MST3K: The Movie, with This Island Earth).

The humor can be hit-or-miss at times, but mostly it's right on. The sketches are funny, and help keep you sane between watching B-movie goodness. And how can anyone not love TV's Frank?
I have so many favorite moments from the show it would take forever to list them here.

I've never tried RiffTrax, the idea of playing an audio over recent big-name films just doesn't seem to have the same charm... even if the movies are overrated.

I need to see a lot more MST3K. I've seen a few (my brother used to be a huge fan and he got me into them) and they're great. TheTime Chasers one is my favorite.
