I don't know the history of its development, unfortunately. As simplistic as it was though, I really fell in love with it. A lot of that had to do with the music like I said, but I also found the story rather...moving, I guess. Yeah, its cliche, but still.
If you ever really want to know why I love it so much, head to YouTube and check out Kikoskia's Let's Play of it. He and I seem to share almost identical views on the game. (It was that LP that made me a big fan of his, actually.)

American's weren't the RPG players they now are back then. Mystic Quest was supposed to be like a basic here is the gist of RPG's now move on to the harder difficulty. Which thankfully we got the easier version of FF4 otherwise my life could be completely different.

Where, sir, do you get your information? Enix does not own Square and Square does not own Enix. They merged. Both were doing shitty, Enix because of its constant delays and failure to deliver, and Square because of the horrible Spirits Within movie. If I recall correctly I believe it was to reduce costs of development for both companies that triggered the merger.

I didn't think it was that bad. The movie basically asked the question, "What if Earth was dying and only a small group could save it?" I was satisfied with the answer. Of course, at that time, I wasn't really into the franchise, but I was getting there.

It would have been fine if they didn't try to market it with the Final Fantasy name. I think that alone made people go see it. It pissed off fans expecting a Final Fantasy based movie, and triggered people to say "WTF IS THIS?!"

If I remember correctly, Super Mario Bros. got an even bigger such reaction.

This is the best song in a game ever. Mystic Quest is the shit, it was actually the first RPG I ever beat.

Atleast that movie had familiarity in it. Other then a guy named Cid and something about crystals thats all we got. Atleast I could tell who was supposed to be who in Mario Bros. plus it's fun to watch again unlike the FF movie.

Actually, there was one other FF element the movie had: A group of people saving a dying planet. Hironobu Sakaguchi said himself that that's what the heart of every FF installment revolves around.

FF5 is a great game though, and criminally underrated. But shame on you for leaving FF6 out of this discussion. There have been several FF4 vs. FF6 debates on these forums, so it seems a little unfair to single out FF4 as the lone target of your "FF5 is awesome" crusade.
Not trying to start a crusade, just curious as to what people think about FFV and why it's barely mentioned. I do agree that IV had a better story, but that's about the only thing better about it. Since the characters were always the same (with the same abilities), it was virtually the same experience every time you went through it. What made V so great wasn't the story so much but the customization. And of course I completely forgot his name was Bartz, since I always rename my characters. So I don't think his name is the issue. (There's a feature in the game that allows you to name him whatever).
I didn't mention 6 because I don't think there's a soul alive who would say that 5 is better than 6. So I figured I didn't have to mention it. FFVI was arguably the best of all FF games so did I really need to start a debate about that? Who on earth would argue that 4 was better than 6?

That music sounds more like Capcom music. It almost sounds like a Mega Man level.

Hey FFIV was awesome, I'm not arguing that. I played the shit out of it when it was released way back in '91. I just believed that the next chapter improved over it in many ways. The job system I felt allowed for a lot more freedom in gameplay. And with VI and it's plethera of characters that I could change at random throughout the game allowed me to have a different experience everytime I went through. I loved Yang. He was my favorite character in the fourth one. So it pissed me off when I had to lose him due to the story predetermining who was in my party.
I checked out that link and it goes off about IV, but says almost nothing about VI. Except that IV is 'arguably' better. That's never gonna convince me that IV is a better game.

I played the hell out of V. the reason I like it more than other games in the series is the customization. In other games, you have to base your tactics on the pros and cons of each character in your party. But not in V: If you wanted a healer, you can make everyone in your party a freaking healer if you wanted! It also allows you to completely change up your party whenever you feel like it, which is pretty rad.
Also, Shinryu, Gilglamesh, and Neo ExDeath are the coolest bosses in the series
EDIT: Oh, did I forget to mention the soundtrack? The Music in Final Fantasy V are a personal favorate of mine

There's always a dominant company in a merger, though. And in this case, Enix was the dominant company.
Quote:
Square Enix was formed as the result of a merger between Square Co. and the Enix Corporation. On April 1, 2003, Enix legally absorbed Square, with Square stockholders receiving 0.85 shares of stock in the new company compared to Enix stockholders receiving a one-to-one trade. As part of the merger, many of the top officials within Square Co. assumed the leadership roles in the new corporate hierarchy, including president Yōichi Wada, who was appointed president of the new corporation.
The former Enix CEO Yasuhiro Fukushima is the chairman.

I prefer V over most of the 2D installments. However I admit that I never could really get into the II and I never actually got to play 6. Despite Bartz' silly name I still find him to be a likable guy. I also like that you can change his name. Too many RPGs feel too impersonal when your lead is stuck with a silly name just so VA fans can hear voice dialogue instead of using their imaginations.
I feel a mini-rant coming on so I'll just stop here and finish with saying that I can understand why different people have a different favorite when it comes to the series. Depending on what you were exposed to first and what you were experiencing at the time can have a major impact on your opinion.

I actually just started playing III for the first time and I like it more than most people probably will. But once again I'm a sucker for the job systems. However it will be another 'forgotten' game since it wasn't released in this country. And no, the DS remake doesn't count.

that was squares final game as their company was in danger of going bankrupt. so they put all their eggs in the FF basket, and it worked.
or something like that

Yeah I think that's right. It was gonna be the creator of Final Fantasy's last attempt to keep the company alive. So he called it Final Fantasy.

Ok FF9. An engaging plot, a rogue for a main character, beautiful environments, the richest soundtrack on the PS1, and Quina's there. Not actually better than 6, I know, but god damn totally second. Then four. 9 just executes a more engaging fantasy setting I think.
