So I'll try to keep this short, but be forewarned there is the distinct probability of extreme fangirl gushing ahead.
So a good friend of mine is a media photographer, and is friends with one of my idols, figure skater Kurt Browning. Now, I had never met him before, but he was in a show in Anaheim and she asked him to get me tickets and passes to the after-party. (He's always offering her tickets, but she gets in on a media pass so she never takes him up on it.) Short version, I had fucking third row center seats to this show, got to see him skate two programs, and it was the most awesome thing that has happened to me in recent memory.
So I go to the afterparty. Get to meet a bunch of my favorite skaters, get their autographs, I'm on cloud nine. Then I get to meet HIM, and get his autograph, and I just ascended to somewhere around cloud 12.
And then, because he knows my friend, he actually sits down at our table, and talks to us for like forty-five minutes. I hang back because I know my friend needs to do an actual media interview with him and I don't want to get in the way, but he literally pulls out a chair for me and says, "c'mon, join us." So I do.
Once the interview is over, the topic turns to the movie he happened to watch on the plane ride he had taken to get to Anaheim earlier that day. Turns out the movie was the original Terminator, and it turns out that, to my complete and utter shock, Kurt Browning is an enormous sci-fi geek. We spent like twenty minutes in the nerdiest conversation you could possibly imagine, discussing Terminator universe continuity, the Wolverine movie, and weather Ryan Reynolds will or will not make an awesome Green Lantern. (He says no, I say yes.)
I did not think Kurt Browning could get any more awesome. I stand very, very corrected. (it should also be noted he's just a good *guy* too. Not just with me; the way he makes sure every fan gets their picture/autograph/time with him is absolutely amazing.)

Everyone has an inner nerd and his had a moment to shine for you. My old man is the least nerdy guy you could meet and he's into Stargate. In fact the only video he officially owning in our house is the original stargate.

Strong words coming from THE Pokemon master. Why don't you go hide under your sheets and play with your pokeballs: big people are talking.

I don't really have a hero because I want to be someone less compitent people look up to (not those who are blatantly less compitent like Alex Jones or various other conspiracy theorists). I am like electricity: using the infinite well of knowledge/bullshit that is the Internet, I could either spark a hovering lightbulb in troubled people's minds or metaphorically fry some asshole who decides to troll/pick on me. I'm good with technology and have good comprehension skills.

Aqua, quoting yourself as your signature is possibly the gayest thing ever.
Back on topic, that's awesome you got to meet your hero, SH, and even better that it turns out he was a sci-fi nerd!

It's always cool when you meet people your fans of and they turn out to not be complete assholes. I met Chino from the Deftones, and he was really fucking cool and it was good to see a person like that not putting themselves on a pedestal and treating their fans not as fans, but as people on their same level.

I second that. Read his blog, he is a huge nerd and an excellent writer.
And, even he makes fun of Wesley Crusher. (Which is probably where ToG's hate of him stems from.)

It's funny, I was at my friend's house last night and someone brought up figure skating, so I told your story Hawk. And that's really cool that he's a geek. My personal hero is Eddie Van Halen (duh), but I don't think I'd want to meet him, because I've heard that he can be a huge prick.

You guys need to keep in mind that if a camera was following us around and seeing our every move, we would all probably look like dicks.

Eh, the five year old buy in me has to say... Hawk and Kurt Browning, sittin' in a tree...
Anyway, now for the non-Hacker portion of my post.
That's wicked, Hawk, I have two idols, but one of them is fictional, so I won't talk about them. My non-fiction hero is Daniel Johnston... he's just awesome. He's one of my favorite musicians of all time - probably my favorite solo artist - and the fact he did all that with everything that happened to him... yeah. Also, it appears we have the same mental disorder, so, huzzah to that.

I didn't mean just paparazzi stuff, interviews, etc. as well. I mean, how do you know he has been known to be a dick?
