Well, they finally put it out. Sooner or later, whenever I decide to get wireless for my apartment, I'm probably going to get it as I've never played it before and want to experience it on the big screen. Wikipedia says it's the "original version." Which probably means it's hard as fuck.
Question. Val, what did you mean by "wasting attacks on enemies that are already dead." How the hell do you tell when an enemy is dead?

What he means is this:
There are 9 imps attacking you. You have two fighters choose to attack Imp #2. The first fighter kills the imp. The second fighter attempts to attack Imp #2. Imp #2 no longer exists, so the attack is now null.

Syd will probably recommend the NES version, what with being upset that GBA players have to do less work to beat it.

This leaves only Contra and Battletoads as the remaining Super Mario Bros.-surpassing NES games not on the VC.

Check the NES list. Only nine of its games surpassed Super Mario Bros. and Tetris isn't one of them.

Of all the versions, I recommend the PS1 version. The bugs are fixed, and you have the option of playing with the game as it originally was, or with the "easy mode" enhancements.

I would recommend either the NES version (because you shouldn't need the spells that don't work properly anyway) or the MSX version with a translation patch.

Yeah, I would vote either NES or PS1, depending on how oldschool you want to go. For those of us who played the original as kids, NES still has a lot of nostalgic fun value despite what a PITA it can be at times. (I'm looking at you, Elfland.) PS1 is a great version too though. Bugfixes like Usa said, and lots of fun little extras.

Real men (And SH) play the NES version. You should not buy an updated version of a game that includes an "easy mode" if the original didn't. Know why? It makes you a fucking pussy. Definitely get this though, because if you get bored you can always do a sliding puzzle! (As long as you have the ship)

Jeebus, I agree that FFI for the NES is the right way to go, but your argument makes you sound like you would advocate people away from any innovations. Would you tell someone that a car built with an MP3 jack, air bags and anti-lock brakes is for pussies because it has additional features?

While my heart agrees with you, Jeebus, I can really, really understand why people would go with the PS1. The game really is a slog in places, and the updated version just offers a better overall experience as a gamer if you have no nostalgic love for the original.
What DOES irritate me about the PS1 version is that you have to play through both "easy" and "original" mode to unlock all the content. I don't mind having to play the game twice, but let me play it how I want. Forcing both modes annoys newbies who don't want to deal with some of the issues the original game had, and it annoys people like me who really, really don't want to play in easy mode because (for me) that makes it different from the game I grew up with and love. Lose/lose.

No, Captain Strawman, I would not tell them not to buy a nice car. My argument is that people should not buy rereleases of games that have been dumbed down because they were deemed "too hard". That has absolutely nothing to do with what you were talking about.

I do -not- advocate playing the "easy mode" of the game. Just that the updated graphics and bells and whistles are nice, and the bugfixes go beyond fixing the spells that don't work (elemental weapons work, the black belt bug is fixed, stuff like that). You have the option to turn on or off enhancements like being allowed to attack null enemies and being able to use LIFE spells in battle. The most significant differences I can remember, actually, makes the game harder...bosses have double hit points, and Chaos is actually random instead of working off a script.
I like the original, but it's not the best version of the game.
BTW, Syd, the MSX version is even more bugged up than the original. And Dawn of Souls is utter crapola.

This. Although I'll preface that by saying that the NES version will always be the most *fun* for me, in spite of its frustrations.

I gotta say that the NES version confused the hell out of me... I made it all the way to the Oxyale situation, and I thought it was timed because the pirate said I was too late. That PISSED me off so I reset the game, started anew and tried to do it faster. Six years later, I buy dawn of souls and realize that I had to find the caravan across the desert. What the fuck...

Oh that is PAINFUL. That Oxyale part really is confusing. My first time through I actually managed to find the caravan and buy the bottle, but then when I used it, it said the fairy had "disappeared and was gone." 7 year old me did not think to go check the spring in Gaia, and thought the fairy was lost forever, so I started over. *shakes head.*

Well when they just tell you that "Oh that fairy? I sold her" I was like damnit so I wandered all over, the monsters at the desert were to strong for me so I didn't bother going through there, but I did find the cube before that somehow. Why I had it I dunno... It also didn't help that the walkthrough that came through the game stopped right after you get the floater stone or kill kary (can't remember)

Really? The MSX version is worse? My understanding was that the MSX version was the original, a few errors were made when porting it to the NES. Damn.

Yeah, we've all had issues restarting games when we didn't need to I'm sure. Even worse is when you DO need to restart. The most recent time this happened to me was in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. There's a part when some chick is following you and you need to protect her. I managed to save the came about half a second before some dude's sword finished slicing through her neck, so I got to start all over again.

*wince* No backup save? I learned from doing that exact sort of things to always, ALWAYS alternate between two save files.
Course if you have a lot of games, save card space might be premium, but it might be worth buying another one. I've had so many times I've thought, "oh thank god I never have to play THAT part again unless I want to" only to fuck up three or four hours later and either redo it or start all over. God I hate that.

I do this often with my Suikoden games. I learned the hard way after playing through the first time that after every Major War Battle you should save and venture forth to find a Star of Destiny.... but that's beside the point. FF 1 made me an rpg lover, but it's lack of explinations when it came to certain "story points" was horrible

I wonder if the lack of clarity was just due to a bad translation, or if it was genuinly badly written. I'd guess the former, but I'm not really sure. By the time I played the PS1 (which I hear is a much better translation) I knew all the story and plot points so well that the hints barely registered. I have no idea if they would actually be better for a newbie player or not.
