Hey everyone, random stupid Sonic recolor #312 here. I'm posting a somewhat biased list of underrated games here and the reason they don't see light.

1 - Heretic (PC)
Reason: Doom Clone, even the same engine
Heretic is a fantasy-themed shredfest produced by Raven Software and released in 1994. Back in this era Doom clones were pretty much doomed to extremely biased reviews, so Heretic didn't make as much market impact as Doom did, but come on, Doom producer John Romero even produced Heretic, and a few new features were added to the classic Doom formula: Inventory system, weapon Powerups, and more open levels to name some key features.

2 - System Shock 2 (PC)
Reason: Looking Glass' marketing team is incompetent
System Shock 2 was a great FPSRPG built on the same engine as Thief, and was pretty immersive and fun. Not very unique, but immersive and fun, especially in co-op. The game is infinitely replayable because you can experement with the development of your character, and it runs great on mid end PCs.

3 - Strife: Quest for the Sigil (PC)
Reason: 1996 Doom engine game + creation of superior Quake engine = ...take a guess
Strife is probably one of the first FPS games to incorporate mission objectives. It was also pretty much just a first person version of Zelda, but it was pretty fun, and Deus Ex has a lot to thank Strife for.

4 - Knuckles Chaotix (32X)
Reason: Doomed hardware
The reason I put this in is because MOST of the classic Sonic games were great; the Genesis Sonic games were legendary. Knuckles Chaotix takes the classic Sonic games, makes better graphics, and adds some new elements to the formula, like the CombiRing that was first concieved in Sonic Crackers which is the most controversial Sonic game. The reason Chaotix isn't very popular is because the 32X was doomed to suck Nintendo and Sony's cock.

5 - WOlfenstein 3D
Reason: Not being Doom
This game was the grandfather of the FPS genre we all know and love, but didn't get near as much recognition as Doom.

I'm assuming he meant doom 3, which still wouldn't make sense since it got generally favorable reviews and sold 3.5 million copies.

Yeah, people always talk shit about Doom 1. It's not like it POPULARIZED THE ENTIRE GENRE.

If anything, Wolfenstein 3D is underrated, for not being Doom. The fact that it had like 5 different textures and three different enemies didn't help, either.

I am so confused, did #5 originally read as Doom?

In any case, Wolfenstein gets plenty of credit for getting a genre going.

I like the tinman.
I like the wizard of Oz.

Man, Wolfenstein was the first FPS I played as a kid. My dad's friend made a hacked copy for us and even copied the cool hint book with the maps and commentary. That's one I'll probably play every year or so until I die. Doom is awesome too, I didn't get to play the PC version until the late 90s (I played it on the [don't know why I had it] 32x). Quake was another one of those games I played the hell out of. What was this thread about again?

With the reasoning of it not being halo.

That just doesn't make sense. Halo is a console-centric series, and Doom's a PC-centric series. Although they're both First-Person Shooters, they're apples and oranges. Ask PC gamers if Doom's underrated. Then ask a console gamer if Halo's overrated.

My point is that PC gamers generally know Doom is one of the innovators of FPS games, and most console gamers consider Halo to be their Doom, if that makes sense.

Well, yeah. But there wasn't really a boom in FPS games for consoles like the one caused by Halo.

I'm going with the old argument that, X-Box minus Halo would equal Suckage...
N64 without Goldeneye, N64 still would have gone strong, just the playstion would beat it out harder.
Microsoft needed Halo, and without it X-Box would have been going with only Project Gotham Racing.

And who knows maybe without the Xbox Sega would have continued making systems...

how can a game that came out before doom existed not get recognition because it's not doom?

that sentence hurt my head.

Doom was pretty much an error on my part and that's why it was changed to Wolf 3d, because Wolf3D invented the FPS genre but didn't get as much recognition as Doom. Some of it went by personal feelings, like I thought Doom was underrated for being obsolete, cause there's still a small community that plays the shit out of the game and various user-made maps. Poor Wolfenstein has an even smaller community.
