So, I'm a huge Conan-Doyle fan, read all the Sherlock Holmes stories, huge geek for them. When I first heard about the Robert Downey Jr. movie, I was skeptical. Then I saw the trailer:

I'm not sure quite how I feel about this as a Sherlock Holmes movie, but it sure as hell looks like its going to be a fun *movie.* And knowing the studios, they probably have put clips from every single action sequence here to make it look a lot more actiony/explody than it actually is. Downey is one of my favorite actors, and he looks like he's going to be a great 'newer generation' Holmes. I think Basil Rathbone will always be who I see as Holmes when I read the books, but this still looks promising. What do you think?

Doesn't look too bad.

Wow, I really can't believe they have not done more with the Sherlock Holmes franchise in relation to film. He is such a recognizable icon, and a very easy character to write stories for.

You know, that's a really good point. Maybe they just figure Holmes stories are too plodding and slow paced for a feature film. (Which I suppose they would be if you filmed them exactly are written.) Maybe this will kick-start something. I hope so, because I love him.

By the bye, did anyone see ANYTHING in that preview resembling Moriarty? He's not necessarily the villain of course, but he would be the obvious choice, and a good one at that.

I'm going to watch this. I don't know why, but I am probably going to watch this at least five times in the theater alone. I need a new movie that doesn't make everything seem so damn serious. If I can watch a new movie that can somehow manage to do that without coming off as stupid or mundane, then I will be content.

Robert Downey Jr....Nuff.

I honestly would rather see maybe Simon Pegg as Watson. Jude Law is too much of a pretty boy to be Watson in my opinion.

But if they do it correctly and make it enjoyable even for the hardcore fans you'll see books fly of the shelves Ghostbuster's style.

I can't stand Jude Law. Only thing I liked him in was Gladiator. Oh wait, that was Joaquim Phoenix. What the fuck has Jude Law done besides cheat on his wife? Anything?

Well, he did "Gattaca," great movie but frankly he was really wrong for that part. Other than that...not much. He really is the poor man's Joaquin Phoenix. Laughing I don't think he'll be a great Watson, but as long as he doesn't actively screw things up, Downey should be able to bring this one home if it has a decent script.

I never got into the Sherlock Holmes books so I doubt I'll see this. Just not my kind of thing I guess.

This looks a lot less like Sherlock Holmes and more like 1800's James Bond.

Well, except for the lack of technology. Holmes was much more into beating people with his cane or fists than anything else. (He was actually a prizefighter before he got into mystery solving, and one of the moments that made me think the franchise may be in safe hands was the part that had him boxing.)

I don't know if you have ever seen any episodes of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, but they are very faithful to the original stories. I have those set to record on my Tivo. They don't come on as much anymore though.

from riskybusinessblog

A "Sherlock Holmes" sequel is afoot.

Three months ahead of the release of its Robert Downey Jr. action pic, Warners is developing a new installment.

The studio is poised to bring on Kieran and Michele Mulroney, the scribes who are penning its "Justice League: Mortal" tentpole, to pen a draft of the new tale. Brad Pitt has had discussions with producers to star as Holmes' nemesis Moriarty in the new pic, say people familiar with the project, though there is no deal in place for him to take the part.

Susan Downey, Dan Lin, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram produced "Holmes," a holiday release that, from well-received footage at Comic-Con, appears to be an action-heavy rendition of the world Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created.

Guy Ritchie helms the pic, and Downey stars as the title character; Jude Law plays protege Watson, and Rachel McAdams stars as love interest Irene Adler. Much of the talent is expected to return in the new pic, as could Ritchie as director.

Pitt has been the subject of a litany of blog rumors as appearing in several shots of "Holmes" as Moriarty, but those familiar with the script say the character is in shadow and cannot be recognized.

Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham, Wigram and Simon Kinberg all worked on the screenplay for the first pic, which is set in the world of Holmes but creates a new story and challenges for the iconic characters. It's unclear whether the new pic would also invent a new story or draw more from previous Conan Doyle material.

Pitt, repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment, most recently of course starred in "Inglourious Basterds" and is on board to star in Columbia's revamped "Moneyball," among other projects.

In addition to the ensemble superhero pic "Justice league," the Mulroneys, repped by CAA and Management 360, wrote and directed "Paper Man," the superhero-tinged dramedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Daniels that opened the Los Angeles Film Festival this year.

It's increasingly common for a studio to begin developing sequels ahead of a movie's release, enabling a second pic to get into production faster than it normally would, and at a comparatively low cost. Warners began pushing "The Hangover," as the movie's prerelease buzz began to grow, though did not close deals until after the movie had begun raking in boxoffice dollars.

Warners is keen on developing new franchises, with Holmes -- with its broad fan base and rich source material -- considered a very appealing candidate. The project would also mean Downey would star in a second franchise, after "Iron Man," while DreamWorks could build yet another franchise around him with "Cowboys and Aliens."
