I agree with the bulk of the list, but i just can't buy into having GTAIV on that list, as a matter of fact I think it delivered on pretty much everything it promised, it has a great story. vastly improved graphics, online multiplayer, expansions, and a lot more. The one main gripe I have heard over and over again is the car handling, I can only say I think it was a Improvement. Come down to diffrent strokes for different folks I guess.
On the other hand though: Fable is IMO deserving of the number one spot on that list

That's like, their opinion, man... Sometimes lots of hype doesn't mean the game will not be inside its expectations, IMHO.

I don't get all the hate for GTAIV either. It's a good game to me, and if people are calling it disappointing, I'm not sure what they were expecting.
I agree with some of the list; Halo 3, Lair, and Killzone for sure were overhyped to the point of nausea. But the rest of the list I don't think was overhyped at all. Hell, I didn't even hear about Spore until a few weeks before it was released, and Fable delivered on it's promises.

There's a difference between hype and fan-hype, and whoever did this list doesn't seem to understand that. Shenmue made the list? Seriously? The game has a cultish fanbase, but dude, just because you have one friend who STILL never shuts the fuck about how awesome Shenmue is, that doesn't make it overhyped. Shenmue is barely even a blip on the radar of most mainstream gamers, so it's hard to call it overhyped.
Also, for a game to be overhyped, it needs to fail to live up to the hype. Super Mario 3 objectively fails in this category. There wasn't a gamer alive that wasn't excited for the release of Super Mario 3, nor one who was disappointed upon playing it. The game was amazing at the time, and is still damn fun now. Anyone who doesn't loveSuper Mario 3 is one of two things. Option 1, you're a troll. Option 2, you're a non-gamer, like my mom, and you think Doki Doki Mario 2 is the best Mario game ever made.

Your mom is cool; I play Mario 2 way more than I play Mario 3. They're both great games, but I think Doki Doki is slightly more fun and weird.

'll definitely agree that the weirdness factor adds a certain undeniable charm to the game. And the fact that there's no time limit is pretty cool too.

Charming yes, but it ultimately fails as a groundbreaking platformer, considering what it had to live up to. It's sandwiched in between two tremendous games that shaped a genre and it doesn't help that after a few levels of play you just don't care any more. After I beat SMB2 the first time, I just kind of shrugged and went back to play the first and more entertaining one. Then of course SMB3 came out and made me the man I am today

...I swear I said and posted this exact same thing, or something very similar. Not the first time in the last few days either a post of mine has disappeared.

I came here to say what Syd did about Mario 3. This is the game that a lot of people still think was the greatest Mario game ever. The one that Nintendo delayed porting to the GBA, knowing it would do well no matter when it came out. The one that still gets Nintendo to add as many powerups as possible to Mario games. How did it fail to live up to its hype?

im sort of on the same wavelength
I love SMB3 but SMB2's first stage music has a level of nostalgia that makes me want to warp back to my childhood instantly.

To be honest, I'm beginning to feel that way about SMB1 & 3 than I am 2. but only because I have played the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck out of those games.

Just to address the overhype of SMB 3, Nintendo did create a whole movie around its unveiling, The Wizard...or Rainman for kids. I can't really think of another movie off the top of my head that was a complete video game commercial.

A fair amount of the hardcore GTA fans were disappointed with GTAIV, same with Melee fans and Brawl. Personally I think its because the hardcores had too much time to stew with the old game.
Oh and Halo 3 was insane in my school too, there was about 4 people missing in 2 or 3 of my classes

The movie was a commercial for all things Nintendo, not specifically for SMB3. Though the movie was hyped as being the first peak at SMB3.
But let's not confuse things here: The Wizard didn't sell copies of SMB3; SMB3 sold tickets to The Wizard.

Fallout 3.
Alright, hear me out. It was hyped because "oh shit it's a new fallout by bethesda" but about 75% of the people who played Fallout 3 never played any others, so now you have a divided fanbase. I guess "overhyped" is a poor word for it, but I still find that a bit screwed up.

Yeah, I'm on the classic fan side myself, especially with the Elder Scrolls series. I overheard people talking and heard one of them mention Morrowind 2 and I wanted to punch them in the cerebellum.

I don't agree with Mario 3 (Syd explained why perfectly), Metal Gear Solid 2 (if I have to hear "I DON'T LIKE PLAYING AS RAIDEN WAH WAH WAHHH" one more time, heads are gonna roll. If you're buying a game because of a single character and not because of the actual gameplay, please get away from me), or Mortal Kombat.

I disagree with Enter the Matrix. I'm having fun with it now and it's challenging, which is all that counts to me in a game.
