You know what Castlevania needs? A light gun game.

Oh wait, they've made one: http://www.konami.jp/products/dracula_ac/

It hits Japanese arcade on October 2nd. It's called Castlevania: The Arcade.

Conceptually it could be fun if you had control over the character's body. If it is on a rail though, fuck it, it will be boring.

Well, here's the thing. The game isn't so much a light gun game as it is a light whip game. According to Wikipedia:

"Players utilize a special LED whip remote. The remote has two buttons. A top thumb button used to activate the whip, prompting players to swing the remote at the screen to damage enemies. A bottom button for the index finger is used to activate subweapons, such as knives or crosses."

So depending on how cynical you are, it's either completely innovative or it's nothing more than a glorified light gun game. I go completely retarded for anything Castlevania-related, so I'm excited. Especially because if this ever gets a port, it would logically end up on the Wii.

Could have been a test location.

I should have played it then, one of the kids roped into spending all my money on racing games.

Anyways, it looks cool, hope it comes out here, in cabinet form if possible.

I thought that this was already out in Japan. Kotaku reported it as being officially released back in February and I remember seeing videos of people playing it at test locations even earlier than that. Was the release date pushed back for some reason?

Edit: I found a video of it being played at a test location in the UK too. It looks like they must have translated at least some of the game to English, so maybe it will show up in the US at some point:

Wikipedia lists it as being released October 2, 2009 and cites this article: http://www.gpara.com/article/cms_show.php?c_id=11210&c_num=14

I'd trust Kotaku over Wiki though. Hmm.

The control setup looks interesting but I'm not sold on the "on-rails" aspect since a large majority of them encourage exploration.

Looks boring. The trailer just shows you flicking the wand at the screen to attack monsters.

The gameplay is plausible at best.

I tried out an arcade game that does it with a katana, and it worked fairly good.

However, the whole "magic user" vibe from it makes it feel like it's more of a Harry Potter game than a Castlevania one.

I wasn't impressed when Dragon Quest did it (and I'm a huge homo for Dragon Quest), so meh.

When was there a version of Dragon Quest that was a rail shooter?

It doesn't sound like an awful game, it just sounds like an awful Castlevania game. I guess it could be mediocre, I just can't imagine enjoying it, not much of a rail fan.

Not quite. There is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Quest_Swords:_The_Masked_Queen_and_the_Tower_of_Mirrors

And this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenshin_Dragon_Quest:_Yomigaerishi_Densetsu_no_Ken

I have sadly, only played the Wii game. I wonder if Play-Asia sells the TV game, and if it would work on an American TV.

I really hate to be that guy, but plausible is definitely not the word you wanted there.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/plausible

The game is in fact a tangible thing so it exceeds being plausible and simply exists.
You were looking for something more like "mediocre". The Flyin' Jew made me add this.

"passable" was probably the word he was specifically looking for.
