Oh I know. I adore The Punisher. But its point is still valid, and applies very well imho, which is why I chose to quote and endorse it seriously. It does sum up my feelings pretty well.

This is probably going to sound assish or "unpatriotic", but I'm an American who doesn't care that it's the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Yes, we lost lives and a landmark, but life goes on.

When you put things in perspective, there's some truth to that. The tsunami of December 2005 killed far more people and affected far more lives.
Although....it was a natural disaster, and not an act of human evil.

^ Its true. Hurricane Katrina was a huge deal at the time too, but because it was natural, it doesn't resonate as strongly. I mean, we don't have a national day of mourning for that, or for victims of fires, earthquakes, etc.

We have the luxury of not being effected by these tragedies so they hold little meaning to us personally. It's the same way I see those who support wars, it's usually those people whose children aren't coming home in flag draped coffins. Health care as well, no one cares about reform until they or someone they know gets cancer and in turn gets dropped from their insurance.

"SoldierHawk"
My perspective was a little different on the 9-11 aftermath. I had been deployed with the MAGTF in Okinawa and the Philippines for almost 9 months when the tragedy struck. I was also 4 months away from being discharged as my time was up. I had plans to get out, and had already passed my entrance in the U.S. Marshall academy. Well, those hijacking ass clowns put a monkey wrench in that plan, so two weeks after 9/11, I reenlisted.
Now, I didn't reenlist because I wanted to go kick someones ass, or strike revenge for the US. I'm not Captain America and I don't throw my mighty shield around. I reenlisted because my friends were going to Trashganastan and I wasn't going to be the pussy who went home. A few years later I was stationed with a Tank unit and we started having briefings for Iraq. Now, I thought my Captain was fucking joking, I was just a Sergeant and I knew that none of the hijackers were Iraqi. Also, I knew Iraq had it's military crippled in 92, and that they posed no major threat to us at all.
I watched the Iraq war play out and I couldn't believe my eyes. It went from weapons of mass destruction to liberating the people of Iraq from an "evil" dictator. Now, once again, I was just a Sergeant, but I knew of another "evil" dictator who really did have WMD's. But North Korea, they just got a stern look from Bush and some tough Texas talk. I don't understand this country sometimes, we over here dicking around in Iraq, meanwhile there is mass genocide occurring in Darfur. Fuck it, pass me my reenlistment papers let's go blow some more strange people up. STARS AND STRIPES!

I'm not in the military and I knew that, so I'm sure he's fully aware.

I always chuckle when I see that image, the PT belt just adds that little extra bit of irony. It also reminds me that my ship date is close at hand, due to recent personal events I've been a little on edge about it lately, good times though.

I couldn't cut it in the military, I'd probably go Private Pile ala Full Metal Jacket.

Yes Jeebus, I'm sure he does too (which is why I said so in the original post you quoted), but I wanted to make sure there was zero room for misinterpretation. There are genuine assholes on both sides who seem to find the branch they're in more important than the flag everyone fights for. Didn't want a joke to have even the smallest chance of associating me with them.
Believe it or not, we actually have that Army vs. Marines picture hanging in our Company office; it always gets a chuckle out of me. We have quite a few ex-Marines in my unit, so my guess is that one of them put it up, and our CO was good humored enough to let it stand. The other one we have hanging up elsewhere would be this one:
I think our CO put that one up himself...
