I was just on Best Buys Website and I noticed a trade-in offer advertisement. They are taking pretty much any game or console from the last two generations as well as other electronics from ipods to camcorders. It seems that they are giving about 33% of the original price for recent games and solid numbers for consoles. You can get $170 for a like-new Wii. They are doing either mail-in or some stores will have kiosks. Oh, and you get paid out with a bestbuy gift card.
Edit: Looks like they are testing the kiosks in Texas.

How much of a discount would I get if I traded in a Game Cube for a Wii?

Like $5 maybe? (seriously, I've seen Gamecubes going in stores for $15, and 33% is $5)

Gamecubes are pretty worthless nowadays in trade. I can get a used one at the local store for $20...and they have plenty.

I have heard of this. I don't think it will be successful.

Why not? I don't think it will hurt them in any way; there's no real cost to them. I think it's a great idea, since I'd much rather patronize Best Buy than fucking GameStop.

first off, there's nothing wrong with gamestop. I know it's popular to hate the corporation these days, but srsly gaiz.
secondly, best buy is just as bad with their prices as gamestop allegedly is, if not worse. the only difference is that best buy doesn't sell preowned games.
third, I meant more the wal mart thing. I read about it. it's like a red box machine, and it spits out a voucher for store credit for some online game store or something. I don't think people are really going to want to put their vidcons into a machine and not get an instant payoff. I know I wouldn't

Actually, I don't hate GameStop for their prices. I hate GameStop for the shitty treatment I have gotten at every single one of their branches near me. Condescending, unhelpful assholes.
Best Buy, on the other hand, I have always had good experiences with. I'm always more than happy to give them my business, and this is just one more reason as far as I'm concerned.

Just hold on to your old consoles and games; when get as old as me, you'll get some sort of retro bug and buy all that shit back again.

that's weird. around here I seem to get the same unhelpful service at both stores, but usually I know what I'm looking for already when I shop. I guess I can see where you're coming from if it's a customer service issue.

I tried the same tactic with my 8-Bit Theatre shirt, but I guess it was too subtle for them. |
I usually just wear this:

Best. Shirt. EVER.
Do they get bonuses on a per-reservation basis? I wonder sometimes, because those fools act like they're on commission.

the store has to hit a certain quota of preorders or the employees get in trouble or fired. it's just like the people at the mall cellphone kiosks who try to push upgrades and contracts on you as you walk by.
it's their job. they're only doing what they have to to put food on the table.

Ugh, are you one of these people who defend telemarketers too with that same, retarded logic?
A stupid corporate policy that harasses it's customers just to fill a quota is stupid, and as an employee, you have the right to not carry it out. If you get fired, move on to something else that's less soul consuming. There are certain jobs that are bullshit jobs and deserve to be looked down on.
Do you defend thieves and conmen as well? They only steal to put food on their table too.

I've said it before, the dicks at Best Buy look at me like I'm trying to steal shit. The night before I returned to school I went to a gamestop and the guy there didn't try to push madden on me or anything. All you have to say to them when they ask if you need help, is "I'm just browsing right now" and they will often leave you alone. I tried that at Bestbuy and the guy tried to sell me Kane and Lynch for 60 bucks when I bought it at Target for 15 dollars.
I've tried the buyback thing at wal-mart and it's just as if not worse then the ones at gamestop. Think a redbox movie rental service only with games and you are selling them. It's a ripoff. Seriously, sell your games on fucking E-Bay if you are going to do that.

same w/retail stores like JC Penney or SEARS. they have to offer their stupid store card, and they have a 'recommendation' to meet. not necessarily a quota, but basically the same thing. like cops and handing out tickets

Gamestop- Will frequently not carry many games in an effort to save money or hope that used copies come in soon, and their emphasis on focusing on used games is putting a hurt on the industry. The upselling (i.e. asking for reserves or joining clubs/taking advantage of sales) is incredibly annoying, even if the employees have no choice. Horrible return policy, and stores are way too busy, cramped, and uncomfortable, not to mention it has basically become the babysitter for negligent parents' hyperactive kids.
Walmart/Sears/Target/any other dept. store- Low-selection, little-to-no price adjustment over time, games usually locked behind cases so you have to do the shame treatment of asking some lady to unlock the game with the blood-spattered case.Usually staffed by middle-aged non-gamers who will scoff at your nerdy ass (I refuse to go back to Wal-Mart after trying to buy Gears of War 2 there).
Best Buy- The only complaint I really have is the non-adjusted prices. Otherwise, they keep a good stock at release time (as opposed to the pre-order-happy Gamestop), have friendly, tech-savvy employees, fair prices, a decent return/warantee policy, and a comfortable atmosphere.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

Harassment? I've never been harassed by anyone in one of these stores (ignored, but never harassed). The store is in existence to sell product, and one of the ways you sell product is suggest to the customers that they buy it. Sometimes they will, but nobody who doesn't know about it ever buys it. I've never been pushed beyond the simple "No, thanks". Ever. And if they do keep bugging you, for the record, they're not supposed to. Get them in trouble.
Plus, it's their job, and maybe you have the luxury of telling money to fuck off because some people don't like what you do, but trust me, a lot of people don't. There is no such thing as a "bullshit job". You do what you need to to make your money, and if that's sell sell sell, that's what you do.
The comparison to criminals is just plain insulting. For one thing, the only thief that's "just trying to get by" is in a Disney movie. As for telemarketers...I'll just say that if it didn't work, they wouldn't do it.
