I seem to remember PSX had Marrionnete and Shadow or something to those effects. One was a random select, the other became whoever you defeated in the previous round.

I still use my N64 to play No Mercy and update the roster just for fun. Of course, that lasts until the game decides to be an asshole and wipe everything back to default.
Really, I was more of a PS1 guy, but what few good games the N64 did have were fucking masterpieces. Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 easily make my top 10.
