Alright, so the DS iterations of Castlevania look fantastic and having never played one of them yet, I am having a tough time deciding which I should try first.
I usually wouldn't do this, but I have read/heard such mixed things about them I don't know what to think. I trust input here.
So, what do you think?

While all of the games are decent to great, I voted for PoR because I liked the spots of storyline it filled in.
Each of the games is different:
* PoR has partner-swapping which isn't nearly as complicated as I had feared. I also like how it explains why someone not of the Belmont bloodline could use an unlocked Vampire Killer.
* DoS is a sequel to the GBA game with Soma Cruz. It's different because you're playing as the reincarnation of Dracula
* Ecclesia is an alright game, but just as the franchise changed with SotN, so does the Metroidvania aspect of them with OoE. It takes some getting used to the presence of 2 attack buttons. It was an alright game, but in terms of challenge, I'd have to say it's the easiest of the three options here. OoE wins brownie point for having an in-canon female lead heroine (CV Legend and C64 were decanonized).

That's a major spoiler right there.

How the hell did you find that one easy?!?

Not really. It's kind of the basis for the entire game and it's why you go to Castlevania. Anyway, I'd say go with Dawn of Sorrow.

Isn't there a chronological order to the games?
Dawn of Sorrow -> Portrait of Ruin -> Order of Ecclesia
Seems like you should play them in that order.
The only one I have played is Dawn of Sorrow. It was fantastic. Reminded me very much of Super Metroid.

Dawn of Sorrow takes place in 2036.
Portrait of Ruin takes place in 1944.
Order of Ecclesia takes place in a non-specific time, roughly around the 1800's, where the Belmonts have disappeared.

I suppose because I had a combination of the Queen of Hearts (I got suckered into buying Judgment on the Wii) and pattern recognition. Though I will admit, anyone with enough cash can spam the glyphcrash Lumis and Umbra and beat the crap out of Dracula without taking a hit (it's what I did).
One other note regarding OoE is that after playing DoS and PoR, OoE feels like a step back in terms of the exploration you'll find in more of the previous Metroidvania-style CV games.

If you wanted imput, why did you post a poll that lasted all but ten hours? Well, for anyone else who wants to read about this here is my response.
Dawn of sorrow has the soul system, which is extremely neat. Basically, the big exploration novelty of seeing a colorful menagerie of mythological, horror, and original critters and killing them becomes doubly rewarding cause you can steal their soul and use it as an attack. Its fun and interesting, has good music, but the harvesting can get tedious (the creature is bullshit). Vote one.
Order of Eclessia gives us the first canon heroine, which on the one hand I like cause its Kogi Igarashi caving to the demands of the fans who rightly to some degree think he's a sexist douchebag, and on the other hand I don't care cause like most castlevania games the story and writing are pathetic and she basically looks like a black haired Alucard anyway. Its the hardest of the three, even with glyphspamming, and when you don't play it like that it'll kick your ass. Okay, so I'm going through the secret cave, a sort of enemy rush chamber where your combat mettle are put to the test. I get through the tin men and the cave trolls and the archedemons and the double hammers and the weapon masters, with most of them more than capable of ending your life in two or three strikes. I get the boss, which is a chinese hopping vampire. Now, the reason these things are considered anything but ridiculous is the fact that in myth if they touch you you die. So I figure he does nasty damage and hops a lot faster than a normal one, and he does. So I'm beating on him and a little slow moving tracking projectile hits me and I go down. ONE SHOT I GO THE FUCK DOWN. After the veritable gauntlet of superdeath and wearing some of the best armor in the game I get instakilled. BULLSHIT. Still gets a vote over portrait.
Portrait of Ruin. I've heard about this one, from what I hear its a lot of item collecting and spamming two character assaults. I'll pass for a moment.

You do know, that you had 2 attack button in SotN as well, right? You didn't have to equip a shield.

I wasn't ending the discussion, I have all three and wanted to know which one to try, I couldn't resist and started DoS but am still listening to input, people still have differing opinions. For all I know I might wanna bail and try PoR.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Not having played a Castlevania game in ages ever since the Nintendo ones, I got to borrow OoE and besides having little experience in this kind of gameplay, I was able to finish it eventually.
The challenge didn't rely much on boss battles (except perhaps one or two), but rather on exploration, specially after you do what it's needed to find the bonus stages; those were indeed a pain in the ass (unless you use the right glyph combinations).
It was also the very first Castlevania game that I finish legally (if ever beat Simon's Quest, it was because I had a password...).
And of course, I still find amusing that during these grave times, Shanoa finds time to powerwalk.

I have to grab Ecclesia. Portrait of Ruin was damn fun, and anyone who hasn't played it and was a fan of Dawn of Sorrow should definitely give it a try.

I couldn't get over the fact that Dawn of Sorrow is incredibly short.

Yes, but I feel it wasn't encouraged nearly as much as OoE does. On that note, if I had known (and bothered to get a 2nd one) I could dual wield Crissaegrims, I'd savor being a walking abbatoir.
