My N64 still works and i still get hours of enjoyment out of it. My only regret is i don't have more games in my library, and the library is modest none the less. The N64 had a comfortable controller, a decent to awesome line of games and IMO is STILL the best multiplayer system ever. The system is not without it's flause of crappy games and graphics that seem primitive by todays standards, but that gives the system a charm that draws me to it.
Oh and i am one of those people that can say with a straight face that the N64 is my #1 favorite console. I'll admit, i didn't have much experience with the 16-bit era but i did play the 8-Bit era of the NES and while i love the great games like SMB3 and Metroid, i am partial to the N64. I did own a game cube but for some reason the appeal did not last long. I guess it's because all it seemed to me was more glossy looking and had a few additional features.
The whole point of gaming is to get enjoyment out of the games and for me the N64 has done that better then any other console. I'll admit though, the PC has it's own merits too.

We had a discussion on another forum about how the PS1 is the only console people still call by its development code name.
PS-X (PlayStation Experimental) was an internal code name for the PlayStation during development. The popular use of the "PSX" abbreviation outside Sony became a source of confusion when Sony introduced its PSX

Also, I think a lot of us played it during that sweet spot of adolescence that lends itself so well to nostalgia. If you didn't play it back in the day, it'd be really hard to appreciate now since we're all spoiled by modern games. |
The same can be said to a lesser extent with Halo 1

My understanding was that people use PSX to refer to the later hardware revisions. Because it wasn't a PS2, but it was significantly different from the original product. It was PS1.5
As for Saturn, it was the original home of Resident Evil and home to the best version of Mega Man 8.

The only reason I had a Saturn originally was for Resident Evil and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

MM8 was a good game! Not as good as 1-4 or 9, but good.

Fucking unplayable. It's awful. I said this to people who had a N64 and they disagreed saying it was amazing.
Maybe back in the day it was the best but when you have other games to compare it to the controls suck, the graphics are awful and it annoys me when theres an explosion it takes out half the level. |

Eh, there's always a cycle of crap in video games. The late-70's/early-80's are a good example as well, when every company wanted to release their own Atari.

The problem with that era of consoles is that they were either too damn expensive or really damn hard to find. I've never actually seen an actual physical Jaguar, so does it even exist? I'm not sure, but I know there is a Lynx.

I was never an N64 player (I couldn't afford a console besides my NES 'til well into the PS2 cycle), but I was under the impression that the N64 didn't have a hugely good library of games. What was good was REALLY good (Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, etc) but that most of the other games besides the currently acknowledged classics were pretty bad. Am I wrong in this understanding?
If it was correct, it would make sense that the PS1 was more popular. In addition to quite a few truly good, classic games, it also had a nice range of not-classic-but-good games for the playing, too.

You forgot about the improved version of Castlevania Symphony Of The Night, as well:
The Japanese Saturn version of Symphony of the Night includes various new features not seen in the PlayStation version. Maria Renard is a fully playable character and a boss. A new-updated sprite for Richter Belmont is featured in addition to the old one from Castlevania: Dracula X Rondo of Blood, based on Ayami Kojima's depiction of the character. This is the costume Richter uses when he fights Alucard in the Saturn version, and if the player inputs a cheat code, it can be used when playing as Richter. Maria and Richter do not need to be unlocked; they are available at the start of the game. Also, when playing as Maria or Richter, certain areas of the castle play remixes of classic Castlevania music, such as "Vampire Killer" and "Bloody Tears". When playing as Alucard, a "third hand" is available to store food or medicine. A Sound Test option is available from the start of the game, whereas the Japanese Sony Playstation version did not have a sound test at all. Also, in general, characters are more animated during cutscenes than they were in the Sony Playstation version.
Two new areas were added to the castle, the Cursed Prison and the Underground Garden. The Underground Garden area features a new boss, the Skeleton King. A few new weapons, items, and armors were also added for Alucard, such as the Alucard Spear.
There are also some minor animation and gameplay differences. The boss tactic videos in the Playstation version have been removed from the Saturn version. Also, the time in the game is based on the Saturn's internal clock rather than how long the game is played.
***********************************
Also, I have owned two N64s, and can name all of my favorite games for it: Road Rash 64, Conker, Perfect Dark, Super Smash Bros, and all the WCW/WWF games made by Aki.

I'm not gonna bother arguing in defense for the N64. It's not worth it, even if Knyte is dead wrong about the N64 being Nintendo's worst console.
Oh, and even if the Saturn didn't do as well as Sega hoped in the States, it sold considerably well in Japan. It also had a lot of good games released for it. If anything, I think the Saturn may be one of the most underrated systems ever, since it had an awesome library.
And what about the Playstation? Like every other console in the fifth generation, it had its fair share of crap. Just look up the library of Playstation games.
And in my honest opinion, the sixth generation was a bigger joke. Sure, there weren't nearly as many consoles to hog the market, but you got the facts that:
A.) Sega fell out of the console industry in the beginning of the generation.
B.) Nintendo's Gamecube was pretty much the laughingstock of the video game industry.
C.) More and more cutscenes started creeping into video games. Some of today's video games have ridiculously long cutscenes.

It seems like any successful console was like that. Go download one of those 1-gig lots of SNES or SEGA roms, and you'll notice that cycling through, over 90% of the games are pretty much crap. The N64, like previous Nintendo consoles had more exceptional titles than most systems it went up against, when very few companies have had even THAT to brag about. The problem with systems like the 3DO and Jaguar for example, was that not only did they have maybe one or two good (not even very good) games, the console themselves were pretty much crap, whether they were overpriced, prone to failure, or had terrible rendering hardware, etc. Without even having redeeming qualities in the system, there's really no chance of it.

The PS1 didn't really start getting the most third party support, until the N64 started falling behind in like 1999 or something(Correct me, if I'm wrong). N64 still got cross-platform games that were good such as Mortal Kombat 4, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Duke Nukem, Gex, etc. The pricing and general obsolete nature of the cartridge was it's undoing in the late game.

Just to throw it out there, I am still patiently awaiting the Sydlexia.com greatest N64 list (top 30? 25?)

N64 came to prominence in 1996 here, and the site only works for stuff that takes place from 80-95, so I think a Genesis list would be more likely, or even Atari.

I don't know how you could argue otherwise. In a series of very good consoles, the N64 is easily the weakest link.

no it wasn't.
resident evil was on PSX first, then later released on saturn with slightly crappier graphics, better sound, and some slight bonuses.
megaman 8 on saturn was nearly identical to the psx version, but with crappier graphics and sound, but with two extra bosses.
saturn also got a "remixed" version of battle arena toshinden that had crappier graphics, all new music, and two extra characters. it also got a version of castelvania SOTN that had two extra playable characters, new areas to explore (that were pulled from the PSX version) and crappier graphics and sound.

Well, fuck. My bad on Resident Evil.
But the Saturn version of MM8 has Cut Man and Wood Man, which makes it better. The PSX version was used in the Anniversary Collection because it was easier to emulate.
Also, the Saturn got a port of Darkstalkers 2 a month before the PS got a port of the original Darkstalkers game.

yeah, the PSX didn't even get darkstalkers 2, but they DID get the definitive version of darkstalkers 3, with all of the removed characters re-added.
man, I want to hunt some of these saturn games down now!

First of all, The N64 still has some of the best if not best wrestling games, and there were at least 4 of them. I know I had most of them, No Mercy was definitely the best, but there was Wrestlemania 2000, WCW vs NWO: World Tour, and WCW vs NWO: revenge. All awesome (and 4P) wrestling games.
The 64 also had alot of hidden gems like Jet Force Gemini (no pun intended), Tetrisphere, Yoshi's Story, Blast Corps, and Shadows of the Empire.
Also, two Zeldas doesn't hurt.

yoshi's story is AWFUL, and honestly, the big problem with the N64 is that it's games, albeit awesome at the time, don't age very well.
I played jet force Gemini a while ago, and couldn't stand to sit there for more than four seconds.
