Some say that DS is the overall better game. But the GBA version is the closest thing to the authentic version (i.e. SNES) we have, aside from the crappy music. So which do you prefer?

You forgot a few options.

I like the Chronicles version. Decent translation, plays well, and no stupid bonus dungeon crap.

I've been playing the DS version and wound up beating Bahamut before getting Fusoya to join. Just beat the Giant and so now it's loose-ends time before the big dungeon.

Honestly, I really like the DS version. Although I seem to have lost my copy. Sad

Actually, I meant to ask the same question. I absolutely love the extra content in the GBA version, but the music... Yeah.

The Final Fantasy Wikia contains an excellent article pointing out each version's differences. Enjoy.

I just played through IV on DS. It's pretty good, it's just not anything like the classic SNES version.

The Augment system is your friend. Right now my Cecil's level 72 with Draw Attacks and Counter. Rydia's got Fast Talker so she can reliably spam Bahamut, Rosa's got MP+50% and Doublecast so I can raise 2 bodies, Raise and Curaga one, or Protect+Shell in one go. I gave Kain Gil Farmer, not sure what else to give him, maybe Darkness. Edge has Upgrade and Analyze.

The DS version because, before that, I'd been longing for a tough as nails Final Fantasy.

Not on IV, and not during the actual game itself. The save file takes forever to load, but the game itself plays without a hitch.

Tough as nails even when you use a Player's Guide?

I never use guides until I've beaten the game by myself first or as a last resort, so I dunno. Razz

GBA version if you want basically "same shit, different console". DS version's difficulty is ultra-masochistic (as others have warned) but it's the ultimate FF4 experience.

So would someone like to tell me when this game is supposed to get balls hard? I'm on Mt. Hobs and I've been doing just fine.

I know nothing about the DS, you aren't that far into the game at all.

The game starts getting really hard around the Magnetic Cave and the Tower of Zot, but really the difficulty comes and goes with your party. When your party is a heavy fighter, a light fighter, a white mage, a black mage, and a sage, it's pretty easy...but when it suddenly becomes two heavy fighters, a light fighter, and a sage...it gets much harder.

So am I to understand that the reason everybody thinks this game is so hard is because they don't use strategy guides?

The rest of us prefer to play games without someone holding our hand the whole time through, and try to be them on our own merits.

WHAT!?

Using a cheat sheet doesn't make a game easier or harder.

I liked the GBA port however the DS is pretty fun as well save for the fact that they are really vague about how augments are found. Their are some that are achieved by giving spare augments to characters that don't rejoin the party. It's a bit of an odd system however I have to say that it's kind of fun teaching Cecil kick and counter and sometimes putting on "Darkness" just to see how cool it looks on him as a Paladin. They all have their own merits from my experience (I've never played the PS port though) however I find that I like the GBA port when I want the original and the DS port when I want to see something new. The attention to detail in the DS port is nice and their are some good extras however the GBA port is more traditional. In the end it's really just a matter of preference. Hope you are happy with your choice regardless. Smile

So I just got Fusoya, and I need to get him up 10 levels before entering the Giant of Babil. Where's a good place to levelgrind?

Bahamut's Cave has the same enemies as the first few levels of the Lunar Core.

The Giant itself has some pretty easy, yet XP-rich enemies too. But you can't leave it.

If it's just for him, don't bother, his stats never go up.

Regardless, I managed to get through the Giant just fine with Fusoya being only level 53 or something.

I would also like to say the the Odin summon is fucking useless.
