Well, so is the alien facehugger, really. Maybe not the entire basis of the plot, but its certainly a huge centerpiece both effects-wise, and for the fear the creatures cause.

That's awesome, but I wasn't talking about that movie and have given absolutely no opinion on it one way or the other. Saying "well this other movie did it too" isn't an excuse for horrendous it is in this movie.

I wasn't trying to excuse it--merely trying to point out that overlooking that sort of plothole has been required of even the greatest examples of the genre. For whatever that point may be worth. *shrug*.

saw it. liked it. thought it was very well written. but i missed the last 3 minutes unfortunately because i had to use the facilities.

at any rate, i can understand DJ's gripes. they are well founded, but if you just accept the movie for what it is, you will find it to be very enjoyable.

I was thinking about the transformation, and its inconsistency and I came to a conclusion: it is accelerated by trauma. His hand is mauled, and it is the first part of his body to transform. Later on, he jumps into the mech suit and gets the shit beaten out of him. When he comes out, he has drastically changed for the second time in the movie.

interesting observation. it could be his hand transformed the quickest simply because it was broken so it was more vulnerable. so, in essence, it was more susceptible to change, somehow

It could be his hand transformed the quickest because it was convenient for the plot and they thought it would be a really nice reveal since his hand is covered by the cast and you have yet to see that he's transforming, just that he's sick...

No need to be cranky just because you can't argue the fact that, particularly in these case, I'm correct.

Look Jeebs, I hate for my first post in a rather long time to be argumentative, but if you would shut up and watch the movie without any preconceived notions, you might be able to see how good it actually is.

About the movie itself, I thought it was very good because of how realistic it is. Based on what I've seem of humanity, Aliens probably would be treated like that. Wicus would be treated like that. But people need to stop comparing the Prawns to humans. They come from trillions of miles away and another planet, so why the hell should they act like us? Why couldn't there be a really dumb working class or something? The ship could have very easily been a colony ship or exploration vessel that was in some sort of cataclysm.

Oh, and they wouldn't just number the Prawns BECAUSE the people in the film would obviously make the holocaust connection, and demand a change. Besides how the fuck much effort does it take to come up with 'Christopher Johnson'?

None at all, but how much effort does it take to come up with 1.8 million unique names and someone be able to identify them all without branding them? Like you said: they aren't human; that makes it even harder for us to tell them apart.

Good point, but what would any sane person say if a government took 1.8 million beings, numbered them, and put them in a filthy ghetto?

and tattoos wouldnt show well on those green skinned weirdos. or black skinned. or whatever they were. maybe tags, like they do w/wild animals would be easier. maybe they gave the aliens a choice, a number or a name.

Not to mention the fact that prawns are obviously smart enough to understand that their human name has to do with them. Even dogs get that. In the beginning, it would have been to the aliens' advantage to help the humans differentiate them--remember, they were all starving to death. In that position, I'm sure they happily adopted human names if it meant food and shelter. Of course things deteriorated, and I'm sure humans DO have trouble telling them apart so there's plenty of identity theft, as it were, but that's all part of the culture that's been created in the alien slum.

Not to mention the fact that humans (well okay, Europeans) have done that very thing multiple times. When the British and Dutch came into Africa, did they allow the African children they kidnapped, or the slaves and servants they took, to retain their African names? Fuck no. They named them things like Christopher Johnson, both for their own convenience, and to take away their sense of identity. Same thing happened in America with the Native Americans. In the case of District 9, I'm sure it was 99% about bureaucratic convenience, but given that its fairly obvious that the governments/corporations don't want the aliens to leave, and that they want to keep them as subdued as possible, a little bit of the former isn't out of the question either.

You aren't necessarily correct...you might be, and it does make sense, but that doesn't make you absolutely correct, Syd could be right as well, I guess we won't know for certain until the director says something about it. You are Jeebus though, so you must be correct...

You hated on this movie before seeing it, after seeing it wouldn't it look kind of silly if you ended up liking it a lot? Even if you loved it, I had a feeling you were going to maintain your stance.

Syd and I were talking about that on the way home. Chris and his son definitely do in the last portion of the film, but we were both pretty sure that they weren't visible at any other point in the movie on any of the other prawns, or even on those ones earlier in it.

I was wondering about that too, we see chris so much in the 2nd act that i began to wonder why he was the only one spray painted.

I'm pretty sure Chris' stripey friend had one and at least one in the eviction scenes did (NOT Chris.)

Did you notice that said one alien was the only green one? All of the other aliens were reddish-brown, with one or two yellow ones. That may explain what happened on the mothership more clearly.

This movie is brilliant, but an explanation of its thesis may upset some. Not really worth going into as far as this venue is concerned.

Depends on which beings are being put into the ghetto. If it's group A, it's condemned as the evilest of evils. If it's group B, it's their right to do so, to protect their existence.

And if it's group C, well a Commie's gotta do what a Commie's gotta do.

If you're going to make the claim that this movie is "brilliant" and that we're all apparently missing the point of it, I'd definitely like to hear an explaination.
