http://www.i-mockery.com/visionary/turn-your-brain-off.php

Let's face it, 'turn your brain off' has become the universal excuse for going to any movie lately, namely the ones we complain about like the Transformers and The Indiana Jones movie we don't speak of.

I-Mockery basically comes up with a skill we all posses that can defend our brains from this bombardment of silverscreen stupidity: Snarking.

Here's an idea i've come up with, pay to see a movie you would like to see down the road or something that will be easily forgotten because of the summer Blockbuster is hyped to the extreme, lets say a remake of Captain Planet. Then go see the captain planet movie and riff the hell out of it, make fun of it even if people tell you to shut up. This way you get to bash a movie and the executive who greenlighted the movie won't get a damn cent because you paid to see another movie.

I think i'll call this Bash and Cash, you harm the movie on both fronts. It's stupid yes but frankly if the movie does not make money then the franchise is abandoned (hopefully for good).

I like that article a great deal. People need to stop using "turn your brain off" as an argument. Its bothering me a great deal.

The ability to be evenly critical, that is to say to go into a movie without preconceptions, understand the movie on the multiple levels that movies as a medium communicate through, and properly express that opinion as something resembling a valid argument, is lost. People have gotten extra stupid, where they'll declare they like anything cause it has explosions or its cool or whatever. Its as though they have learned to like movies cause they are supposed to like them, if that makes any sense.

I don't know, I value metaphor and language and the formation of raw thoughts into succinct sentences. Or occasionally baroque gilded sentences exploding in a cascade of excessive adverbs and the like. Maybe I'm just bitter that strictly speaking I can't find anyone who wants to engage in this sort of thing, but nevertheless I think the ability to defend and enunciate an opinion in a logical fashion is valuable.

In any case, I'm not fond of making scenes during movies. I think after the movie is fair game, and I don't think I'm going to buy a ticket for anything that's probably not worth watching, but there is no excuse for being a dick. This is a symbolic battle of intellectual vigor versus muddled marketing led ignorance, so the victory must come from civil behavior to of value.

I hate the whole "turn your brain off" argument as much as you two...but making fun of the movie while its playing so other people are telling you to shut up...not so cool. Words alone can't describe how much people talking during a movie at theaters loud enough for me to hear pisses me off Mad
Your not punishing the company by talking during the movie, your just punishing other people who paid money for a ticket

i agree. dont be a dick during the movie. thats just rude and unnecessary. after the movie is over though, pick it apart at the bar or at the pizza place. like RGS said, after the movie is over, its fair game

If I turn my brain off, my body won't secrete and release the serotonin necessary to enjoy ANYTHING, let alone a shitty movie. Also, if I turn my brain off, I'll die.

This is why I think it should be "movie and dinner" instead of "dinner and a movie." During the dinner you at least have something to discuss if nothing else.

I've been reading your post and yeah, i got so pump up that in retrospect being an Ignatius J. Reilly during the film would be way below me. I apologies but that doesn't mean i can't mock the movie to myself.

Or you could just torrent it from somewhere (or rent it after it comes out in DVD, which lately, doesn't really take long), find a couple of friends and snark away.

After all, it's funner to tear apart a movie as a group.

This is just another way of saying "lower your standards". If something is shit, it's shit. Approaching shit from a different angle doesn't make it smell any different, unless you mistakenly approach from downwind.
