You very rarely hear people complain that a Mario game isn't Mario-y enough, but if Sonic game involves Sonic doing anything other than running from left-to-right and occasionally jumping and taking part in mini games for Chaos Emeralds and extra lives, people get all upset.

I think the argument people have is how the non-Sonic sections function. The Were-Hog for example was alright in theory. Going from twitchy-fast platforming to beat-em-up isn't bad on paper, but it was just repetitive and bland (and that god-damned music, ugh). Same thing for the Big/Knuckles/Rouge levels. Having an open world to deal with after a linear platforming sequence sounded okay, but the way they played was just boring and atrociously designed.

I really was always a fan of the first Sonic Adventure. In fact I remember this deal where Hollywood Video would let you rent the Dreamcast, for a fair price, the Summer of 99' before it actually came out.

The problem was VMUs did not exist at that point and saving was therefore impossible. I had to leave the Dreamcast on for over a week. Of course it froze right when I was near the end, but the game felt awesome to play.

When I was younger I had always wanted a Dreamcast. I really liked the potential it shown and I still really wanted to play a 3D Sonic. I've never gotten to play any of the Sonic Adventures but they look good.

I still wonder how many people bought a dreamcast just because they saw the killer whale scene from the Emerald Beach demo level.

I know I did (but in reality I was sold way before that as any Sonic fanboy was).

That was face AND mind melting shit in 1999.

I only played Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island (Sega Mega Drive) from the series. Actually, I was very little back then and I only remember that this game was absolutely awesome! When I recently checked some reception about it, I got really pissed off.

This is true, the DC launch was so fucking awesome. You had Sonic, the 2K games, Soul Caliber, Crazy Taxi, House of the Dead 2 and so on...
