A really good shooter.
You know what you can do for me that would take no effort whatsover?
You can go bitch out your friends at Jasonrivera.com, and tell them to get off their lazy asses and start recapping wrestling again.

funny story about that.
I've severed all ties with jason rivera.
I do, however, happen to be buddies with the guy that sort of kind of never updates toomanychairshots.com, and he happens to be second in command at jasonrivera.com, so I'll mention it to him. I think jason rivera has been offline for a while or something.

Speaking of shooters. You guys try Sin and Punishment for the N64? One of Treasure's finest works, next to Gunstar..
...Hmm, I think I'll make a thread 'bout this later.
Also, Super Aleste/Space Megaforce for the SNES.

GWAH! Zeke, I just checked out your site -- well, that is to say I checked out your latest 5-minute Castlevania, and it's very funny. More than that, I think we have a similar sense of humor... |
No kidding! I'm glad I didn't see "Symphony of the Trite" before I posted my parody, because I would have had to change half the jokes. Those are some hilarious vids you've got there -- I can't wait to see the actual movie.

Aha! I'm glad to hear that, because I was really surprised that it was mentioned but didn't make the list. It's an odd one (especially since the story is almost identical to GQ1's), but it's got real charm, and nobody makes platformers better than Capcom. It's a shame there were only three games in the series.
Since I'm here, kudos to Syd and company on a great list. You guys clearly put lots of effort into this, and I for one had fun reading it. My order would be different, of course, but everybody's is. (My top three are MM3, Metroid, and Zelda -- interesting that greeneyedzeke agrees with me about that last one beating SM3.) |
Thanks! DarkMaze beat me to it, but also like your site.

Ok, I know it's not a perfect list, and you guys haven't played every game for the NES, but WTF? I just ran across your list and was so shocked Baseball Stars wasn't on it that I had to join the forum to complain about it.
I can't really figure out how it could possibly have been overlooked.
Possible reasons...
1. You just didn't like it enough, which is frankly rather hard to believe. This is a game that would make many people's top TEN list, never mind 100. The customization, the gameplay, the customization, etc.
2. You've never played it. I'd understand this one if it was an obscure game, but c'mon, it's BASEBALL STARS! Certainly a pretty well-known game. For someone who comes across as having much experience with NES games, Baseball Stars would be a pretty huge omission.
3. You accidentally skipped over it on the list. So, you have this huge list of 700+ games and you're picking your favoites, your eyes just happen to blink at the precise moment you scan over this game, and you miss it. I might be able to buy this one, but it's a pretty big coincidence that all 3 or 4 or however-many reviewers happened to have the same eye fatigue at the same spot in the list.
4. You were scarred for life losing to the all-female team and refuse to even acknowledge this game's existence anymore.
5. You lost an eye in an unfortunate exploding-battery-powered-ROM incident, likewise resulting in this game being forever banished from your conscious mind.
Do tell, which is it?

I've only played Baseball Stars 2 on Neo-Geo, and it is damn awesome. I didn't know it was on NES.

I was going to agree with the customization and the gameplay, but the customization? I don't know about that.

First of all, there is no sports game out there deserves to be in the Top Ten Games list for any game console. If there was, Baseball Stars would not be it. Baseball Stars is an all right game, but it doesn't stand out in my mind as markedly better than Bases Loaded, Little League Baseball or RBI Baseball, neither of which made the list either. Out of the many, many baseball games for the NES, only two stand out in my mind as exceptional: Konami's Base Wars and Tecmo's Bad News Baseball. I was very disappointed that no one else voted for Bad News Baseball besides me.
Baseball Stars did have some highly advanced customization, and the ability to save your league play was pretty cool, but at the end of the day, it still had the same basic gameplay and graphics as most of the other baseball games on the NES. Philosophically, Baseball Stars does not really fit in with my view of what a game should be. It was a video game for hardcore baseball enthusiasts, not a baseball game for hardcore video game enthusiasts.
And for the record, I never lost to the Lovely Ladies. I usually played as them myself to spite my neighbor when he picked my favorite team, the Ninja Blacksox.

Ok, then, how about the customization?

Well, I'll try to resist the temptation to make 50 posts pimping the same game(s) like another poster in this thread but I do have to comment on this. I feel it is the opposite of what you indicated. The role-playing element attracted me as a video game fan, not as a sports game fan (I can't be bothered with most sports games). In other sports games you are stuck with fixed players with a fixed set of abilities, I tend to view those as the ones only sports enthusiasts will play. In Baseball Stars you could start with a bunch of peons, win money for winning games, pump up your players' abilities, buy new players, etc. I don't know if it was the very first game to offer such a career mode, but it was certainly the best executed and quite revolutionary for its time.

I think everybody played as the Blacksox, I know I did. Then again, black is my favorite color.
If it makes you feel any better pankwindu, if I made a top 100 list, half of the games would be sports games - and the majority of those 50 games would be baseball games.
Edit:
