Ya know, one guy in my introductory English literature class from last semester made a dysentery joke in a presentation done by himself. Most people didn't get it at all because they most likely never played Oregon Trail, or they forgot about it if they did play it.
I felt like sharing that. |
same applies to rickrolling, a guy did a presentation with a rickroll and almost no one got it despite the fact that its almost impossible not to hit if your on youtube
My Oregon Trail story is that I actually copied the game files as a kid at school, but was too stupid to realize it wouldnt work on my 386 PC at home
btw, play Oregon Trail legally free here(Don't copy that floppy doesn't apply here)

Feh. Carpenters for the win. Bankers are too easy. Farmers are a bit too frustrating.

Wrong. And even this statement on that site is wrong: "All of the games in this archive fit into one of three categories; Freeware, Abandon Ware, or Public Domain." I found more than one game there that I know is NOT Freeware or Public Domain, and really couldn't be considered "abandonware", such as the King's Quest series and...Oregon Trail. I recently bought a copy, actually, so it's hardly abandoned. "Abandonware" is just a term people use when they want to feel better about pirating really old games anyways...it has no legal strength.
Not that I care, I have several "abandonded" games myself, but you shouldn't be passing something off as "legal" when it's not.

This topic prompted me to go and replay this, and after ten or more years of not playing, I was able to make it to Oregon on my first try. Provided, three of my friends died in a freak river crossing accident, and one died halfway through with a broken leg, but that's not the point. I came off as a badass by being able to maintain everything with a broken arm one time too...

The Oregon Trail sucks now though. It's all in 3D and shit, and the hunting is FPS.

I dunno, the version I have is pretty good, and pretty close to the original. Just has better graphics and more career options that give minor bonuses (Ranging from Doctor, who has better chances of healing the sick, to the Teacher, who starts with Farmer money and has no benefit, but multiplies the final score by 3.5...Farmers have a better chance of keeping oxen alive, by the way). The hunting does indeed suck though...but I've also seen much older versions of the game with 3D hunting.
I really wonder why this game never got an NES port. Mowing down buffalo with a Zapper sounds like it would be edu-awesome.

Agreed, an NES port of this would be so killer.

I think it would be cool if they did a next gen version of the game in a GTA style.
Grand Theft Wagon: Oregon Trail. I think it'd make millions.
