Cell phones have become a "necessity" in the past decade, I remember when I got my first phone in 2003, it was some blue Kyocera with a backlit monochrome screen. What was the first mobile you got and what are you using now? A brief history of the phones I've had:
1.Kyocera 2345 (sprint) Lost on the streets of Chicago
2.Samsung VI660 (sprint) Changed Carrier
3.LG C1300i (Cingular) Threw it against a concrete wall, hated it
4.Motorola Razr V3i Gunmetal Grey (Cingular) Got wet/broken in 1/2, favorite phone
5.Sony Erricsson w580i Walkman Black (AT&T) Current everyday phone
6.LG KE970 "Shine" Brushed Titanium/gunmetal (GSM) Friend borrowed it & got it wet
7.LG CU915 "Vu" Black (GSM) Current non-everyday phone (replacement for Shine)
If I didn't accidentally break my razr, I'd probably still be using it.

I remember that I bought a cell phone while in college (1999) but hated it so much that I returned it within a week. It might have been a Nokia 6110, but the image they have has a different shell texture than I remember. It was the free phone from AT&T at the time. Not to be confused with AT&T Wireless. This was another carrier that went away before AT&T acquired Cingular.

When I left college in 2000 I decided to get another one and picked up a Nokia 8260.

I kept that damn phone for so long and then bought a Sony Ericsson T610 in the summer of 2003 just after I moved to Boston.

Finally I picked up a Sony Erisson W580i in the summer of 2007.

I have had two or three work phones and one pager that I hated carrying and aren't worth mentioning.

I don't know what model my first one was. I think it was a Nokia, but I never felt any real attachment to it because I was never allowed to use it. My parents made me keep it in my car because i was 16 and I drove a shitty '77 Ford Truck that may or may not make it from destination to destination. I do remember carrying it around in the leg pocket of my carpenter jeans (this was 1998) like a big twat though, just so I'd look like I was so cool that I needed to be reachable at ALL times. I think sometimes people forget how big of a deal it was to have a cell phone a few years ago. It practically made Zack Morris. Anyway, I didn't get my first real cell phone until my freshman year of college (2000). I don't remember model numbers...

1. Old generic Nokia. All I remember is playing Snake on it in Meteorology, and being amazed when I received my first text message. Not just because I'd never heard of text messaging before, but also because it was a deliciously naughty text from a co-ed.

2. Some LG clam phone - It was the fucking bee's knees because it was one of the first phones with a color display.

3. Some newer LG clam phone - Same deal, but had an LCD display on the front and the ability to play real ringtones, which I spent hours on learning how to create and upload my own. Fuckin' ex-girlfriend's dog ate it though.

4. First Gen LG Chocolate - Looked pretty sweet, but kind of annoying to use. It met its end after an unfortunate incident of me trying to unload an 80 pound cooler full of beer off a boat by myself, after I'd already had no less than 24 in my system. Eventually it dried out, but the foggy screen sucked.

5. Motorola SLVR - I liked that phone... It just liked to dial random people when I put it in my pocket.

6. LG NV2 - First full keyboard phone I ever had, which was cool in one sense, but increased the level of difficulty of the stupid practice of texting while driving twofold.

7. Blackberry Curve - The leash my company keeps me on. A blessing and a curse. But it's nice to have free minutes and a free data plan I suppose.

I remember my parents first bag phone. That shit was mo-fo TIZ-IGHT!

Anyways, I got my first phone in '98 which pissed OFF my girlfriend at the time. She was like "WTF do you need a cell phone for, so you can call other girls?" and The answer of course was "yes."

It was the generic Nokia one, with snake, and you could change the face plates and what not, I bought a blue faceplate.

Then after that one, I got tired of having a cell phone so I got rid of it.

A few years and a couple GF's later, my then GF (now wife) wanted me to get a cell phone since I bought myself a 2003 Yamaha R6. She said if I had a motorcycle she woudl feel safer if I had a phone. She got me the cool nokia one that flipped open in a weird way to have a qwerty keyboard, which made texting awesome. that phone was AWESOME. The one in this pic is really close, but I think that is an updated of the one I had, I think mine was the 1st gen of it.

We replaced that with the First Gen LG NV, or envy, or whatever it was called. First gen of that was like a flip open brick though, so it wasn't as cool as I thought it would be. It was ok, but too thick.

I replaced that with the first gen Iphone. Best phone EVER. Still have it, love it, getting ready to replace it with a 3G one though.

That's it.

1. some motorola one through work, no idea what the model was. It was a very sturdy phone, though. Didn't slide or flip open or anything, and had this bumpy rubber strip that ran the entire side of the phone, pretty good camera too.

2. LG chocolate that survived my entire HI experience. Dropped it so many times, would regularly talk on it until the battery ran dry, etc. I actually only stopped using it because the contract ran out.

3. LG Env2 that I got this January, and it's hanging in fairly well. But it randomly takes photos of the inside of my pocket, and if I don't set the unlock sequence to two buttons, it will also call people. It's also being beaten to shit by my box cutter when I'm at work, as they share the same pocket.

Next up I'd love to have an iphone, but I don't know if it's good with as rough as I tend to be on phones.

I don't know how rought you really are on phones, but my original iPhone has been dropped on pavement at least 4 or 5 times. there is a tiny dent on one side (and I mean tiny) and the screen has one very small scratch (that I actually think came from one of my earrings) and a few small scuffs in the silver paint on the back. Over all I'd say it's pretty sturdy. I hear it's not good around water though. :/ also you can't get insurance on an iPhone so if you break it, you gotta pay FULL price for another one, or get a different phone throught AT&T.

Still no MMS too which is annoying to have to have people Email you pics.

The chocolate got dropped at least 20x and eventually got to the point where buttons simply didn't work on the keypad. With this env2, the outer housing has a silver part that's all chipped and gouged to hell, just from bouncing around in my pocket with my box cutter.

If I did get an iphone, I'd either have to not carry it at work, or keep it wrapped in a case or something.

yeah, I wouldn't put it in the same pocket as a box cutter. I don't like to put it in the same pocket as my keys, but sometimes it happens, because honesty, I usually don't know which pocket my keys are in.

I got my first cell phone in 2005. I still have it but hardly use it. My parents and sister had ones before that that were old monochrome Nokia models from the late 90's that were fairly large and only had a crappy version of "Snake" on it.

I had a Motorola V180 since 2002 until last year, when I lost it jumping and dancing in a rock concert.
I got a new one, a Nokia-who-knows-what, that looked pretty nice, it had a camera, bluetooth and all those things that were new for me, one day, I was coming back from my girlfriend house and I was in the bus stop sending a message whe a guy passed by in a bike and took it awat from me, I run a while but he had a bike! I had that phone for like 2 months.
Now I have an old one that belonged to my aunt, is a Motorola V172 I think, a real piece of shit, but what the hell, I don't really need a cel and I'm considering a new life, away from cel-phones.....

I started on a pay as you go phone with a blue screen and it had tetris on it.

Then I graduated to a phone with uh, more colors, until my wife got t-mobile sidekick fever. She used it for awhile til she ended up getting a google phone and I now use her old sidekick. I dig it, at least this way I can surf the net anywhere.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

I have never owned a cell phone. I intend to keep it that way until absolutely necessary.

Never owned a cell phone that I had to get a bill for, but I have a Tracfone for emergencies. That thing gets better service here in the mountains than most of my friends Verizon or U.S Cellular phones for some reason.

The only other cell phone I ever owned besides the iPhone was a Motorolla V557 made for Cingular: http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId=100

It was good when I got it, but then smartphones rose up and it became a piece of shit. It actually had several features my iPhone doesn't have though, such as MMS, customizable text tones, and video capture abilities. The 3G and 3GS have MMS with the new OS, and the 3GS has video capture, but mine does not. And as far as I know, the only way to get custom text tones on an iPhone is to jailbreak it.

So my cellphone history is:

May 16, 2005 - Motorola V557
January 21, 2008 - iPhone (8 GB model)

About a year before I got my iPhone, my Motorola broke from being dropped too many times. The receiver came loose, and in order to get audio on phone calls, I'd have to either put it on speaker or shake it around and hope that it decided to work. Amazingly, Jeebus took ownership of the Motorola after I bought the iPhone. Even though it could only really be used texting, he continued to use it up until July 31st, two days ago.

I held out on getting a cellphone for a long, long time. Now I can't live without it.
