In reality you just have to give props to older games because they made the industry what it is today. Without the 8-16 bit games, we wouldn't have Metal Gear Soild 4 resemble a freakin' movie.
And they all just look so darn cute.

Now that you mention it, that's part of the reason I like the older Mega Man games. The 8-bit sprites and sound make it cute.

FFVI - X are replayable because they have a plethora of characters to use. Unless you're one of those people who likes to level up everyone, I usually use completely different characters every time I play through. Cloud, Red XIII, and Vincent may be my favorite characters in FFVII, but I usually switch it up every playthrough.

FFVII party is Cloud and Aeris, and a dead Tifa. Keeps her level low so she can steal Vagyrisk Claws in Cosmo Canyon later.

Probably msns call, so that the page refreshes and you get new ads and then more ad revenue for msn.

The problem with newer games is that they're too story-driven. A game with an actual story!? How could that possibly be bad?
Pretty easily, actually. First of all, most of these game plots are uninspired recycled B-movie trash with dialogue so cheesy even Steven Seagal would tear up the script in disgust. Secondly, when the game is very plot intensive, it ruins the replayability. When you're playing a game to find out what happens next, it's fun and exciting... the first time. But once you know all the plot twists, the game becomes far less exciting. And you get bored with it. Of course, this is exactly what developers want. They want you to play through a game in a week or two, get bored with it, and buy their newest game. Older games are free from such pretenses and tend to be more replayable because of it. Games like SMB1 and Mega Man 2 are awesome because you just start them up, and go. The rules don't change from level to level. You don't wander around trying to figure out where you're supposed to go. Go forward, and you kill every fucking thing in your way. Simple, effective, and suprirsingly replayable.
And although they are longer than the games of yesteryear, today's games are too short. In the days of 8-bit and 16-bit consoles, the genuine game makers tried to fit as much game as they possibly could on a cartridge; the imitators who were out to make a quick buck off the video game trend threw together crap. Today, game designers rarely push game discs to their maximum capacity, and when they do, it's usually due to hi-res FMV rather than a giant gaming experience. Take the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It will probably have 7 or 8 worlds and best case scenario, around 60 levels. And that was fine 20 years ago when they made Super Mario World, but in today's world, that's completely fucking lazy. A console-based 2D Mario game like this should have been WiiWare. But instead, it's going to be a physical game with a likely MSRP of 49.99. And given the game's price and it's style, it should have at least 200 levels. Realistically, it should have closer to 300 levels. But it won't. So if I buy this game, I'll have it beat in about 3 hours. Fan-fucking-tastic.
NSMBW is just the most glaring example of this. BioShock, Ghostbusters, and Force Unleashed were way too fucking short as well. |
I agree and more on the topic of the complexity that it sometimes goes into. I remember when i got my SNES back in the day you would go into the store pay £40 for Super Mario World, go home stick in the machine and play. Directional buttons move, B is jump, Y run etc. Nowadays its like push a 15 button button combo just to go to the item screen. They are needlessly complex. Now instead of just going home and playing the game and working out what to do by yourself or reading the manual (i like doing that sometimes) your stuck with a hour tutorial stage telling you how to do virtually everything and for me that spoils it there is no discovery and that also takes away the difficulty and replayability.
Another thing regarding controls is the Wii. My sister got a Wii for Christmas and the remote just annoys me. I play Mario Kart with a gamecube controller and i stopped playing Mario Galaxy just cause the gimmick of it annoys me. I just want to be able to move around and play the game not nearly inducing a heart attack just by playing. The idea of swinging your arm around and around going "HHUHUHH I HAVE A SWORD" is not fun it just makes me feel like a total fucking moron.
Also i think its a bit soon for "virtual gaming" like this they need to tweak it a bit more.
The last thing that annoys me about modern gaming is Peoples attitudes nowadays towards them. I have my old consoles set up and i probably play them more than i play newer ones but for some reason peoples attitudes now (from what i have seen) have changed alot. Heres an example.
I was in GAME (dunno what you guys in America have? Gamestop?) and the Xbox360 section is facing the PC clearance section. My mate was looking for Halo 3 or Gears of War 1/2 and I look over and lift Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 which is not really an old game maybe about 5-7 years at the most and i show it to my mate and say its a brilliant game.
He then turns his nose up and says "Look at the graphics". Now hold the fucking phone here. Him as well as my other mate (who also says stuff like this) played these games and older, N64 going back, the latter had a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and they loved those games back then but now they are just "shit" and "unplayable". These are still good games yet people hate them now because they're standards have "improved" and i think that's just sad really and they are the ones missing out.

My original NES broke after years, due to overheating. It was probably my own damn fault though; I was stacking games on the ventilation strip, not knowing what it was.

Every single game in the Boktai series I have found the urge to replay multiple multiple times. Immediately upon completion.
Bioshock was a fantastic game but I don't see me playing through it all over again for a long time. The entire game was based upon a giant SPOILERSPOILER, so once you know that the entire thing seems sort of hollow going through a second time.
It won't stop me from getting the second one though, because the 20+ hours I put into Bioshock (I explored... everything) were awesome.

Good call man, I love the original Theme Park on PS1. It plays fantastically on the DS with the touch screen.

Gimmick? The controls in Mario Galaxy are RETARDEDLY intuitive, and have a very minimal amount of controller shaking and pointing.

I didn't find anything in Mario Galaxy gimmicky other than the fact that a plumber is still saving the same fucking princess and we all continue to find this story interesting.

Say what you will about Nintendo, one fact remains: They build the toughest consoles out there, after Atari (I keep seeing people with functionable Atari 2600 out there)
My regular DS has suffered falls that would had rendered a PSP useless, and it still works, with the only physical damage on it being chipped off plastic.
And of course, there's the Gameboy that survived a bomb...

Reminds me of that X-Play episode where they took a PS2, an Xbox, and a Gamecube and found out which one would survive the most damage. After taking a sledgehammer to them and dropping them fifteen feet (among other things), the Gamecube was the only one still functioning.
