Family Guy is the first cartoon in nearly 50 years to receive a nomination for best comedy series.
I personally think it's pretty cool for a cartoon to be nominated, but seems a little late coming. I find the show to be about 50% less funny as it has been in recent years, and there are certainly funnier cartoons out there, but whatever.
BEST COMEDY SERIES
Family Guy
Entourage
Flight of the Conchords
How I Met Your Mother
The Office
30 Rock
Weeds
BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
Tony Shalhoub, Monk
Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men
If Charlie Sheen or Alec Baldwin win an emmy I will swallow a spork, I swear it.

Except for 30 Rock, all those other shows are more deserving of Best Comedy Series than Family Guy.
As for Best Actor, I'd like to see Tony Shaloub win, and I'd like the win to coerce both him and the USA Network into reconsidering their mutual decision to end Monk after 8 seasons and greenlight a 9th season.

I had no idea that Monk was coming to an end, that bums me out badly. I was always a big Tony Shaloub fan.

It is about time Family Guy was nominated and is definitely late in coming.
It's good to see Big Bang Theory get a nod too; good show.

What the?
Family guy's first 3 seasons should have possibly been considered, but they can't even put on a consistently broadcast schedule now. At least the other shows are on just about every week while in season.

But, if Tony Shaloub continues to play Monk, we'll never get our Wings reunion!

The Emmys are a farce just like every award show (especially the Oscars)*. The Simpsons 15 years ago should have gotten a nomination before the current crap they call Family Guy. The first few seasons maybe, but not now. They don't have an "animated series" nomination then, when they qualify more for that. Makes no sense. I'll be rooting for South Park & Robot Chicken.
*The only exception usually is the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards - they're usually more reasonable

The only awards show that I don't really respect at all, other than the MTV ones, are the Grammys. Everyone else is fairly reasonable. The Oscars has a lot of politics involved, which sometimes lead to odd choices, but overall they tend to nominate the right people and movies even if they don't always pick them.
And the Emmys aren't bad. South Park has won three, for "Best Friends Forever", "Make Love Not Warcraft", and "Imaginationland".

The Simpsons wins when they can't think of anyone else to give an Emmy to.
"Nothing was particularly good this year."
"Eh, fuck it, let's give the Simpsons another Emmy."
And some of those wins, like "Behind The Laughter", were justified.

Those were for best animated series and the like, not best comedy series. As the OP said, this family guy honor is the first best comedy series nomination for a cartoon in 50 years.

I agree, Family Guy especially this season has sucked. They use way too much filler these days. The entire Conway Twitty song, the entire Bryan Adams song, the Christian Bale tirade and so on. Season 3 was the last good season in my opinion.
